Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. By the end of the 2011 NBA lockout, the NBA Players Association settled for a 50-50 split of the league's BRI (Basketball Related Income).

Answer: True

Though the conflict over the new CBA (collective bargaining agreement) wasn't solely over the league's BRI, it was certainly a huge issue. In the previous CBA that was agreed upon in 2005, the players received 57% of the league's BRI. While this may not initially seem like much of a change, these differences actually account for billions of dollars.

The lockout officially ended on December 9, 2011, and the season ended up shortened from 82 to 66 games.
2. On February 19, 2012, the Oklahoma City Thunder became the first team to have one player to score at least 40 points, another player to score at least 50 points, and a third player to record a triple-double all in one game. Who played each role?

Answer: 40 points: Russell Westbrook, 50 points: Kevin Durant, Triple-Double: Serge Ibaka

This occurred during an overtime victory against the Denver Nuggets. Kevin Durant dropped 51 points (along with eight rebounds, three assists, and four steals), Russell Westbrook scored 40 points (and also tallying up nine assists and four rebounds), and Serge Ibaka had 14 points, 15 rebounds, and 11 blocks in the first triple-double of his NBA career.

It was also Durant's first ever 50-point performance in the NBA, which is surprising since at that point he already had two scoring titles under his belt.
3. Which of these events did not occur during the 2011-12 NBA season?

Answer: Ricky Rubio collects a Timberwolves franchise-record nine steals in one game.

The crafty Ricky Rubio never recorded more than six steals during his rookie season.

Kyrie Irving did indeed go 8-for-8 from three-point land during the 2012 Rookie-Sophomore game. He finished the night with 34 points, nine assists, and three rebounds in a 13-point victory for Team Chuck (Charles Barkley) over Team Shaq (Shaquille O'Neal).

Dwight Howard broke Wilt Chamberlain's previous record for most free throw attempts in a game (34) after attempting 39 on January 12, 2012 in a Magic victory against the Golden State Warriors. Howard cashed in on 21 of his 39 free throw attempts. Following the game, J.J. Redick joked, "It's amazing that he made 21."

In what was probably one of the most impressive displays of athleticism throughout the 2011-12 NBA season, Gerald Green pulled off an impressive windmill alley-oop dunk on March 10, 2012 in a loss against the Rockets. His teammate MarShon Brooks provided the lob pass. The high-flying Green ended the night with 26 points, a total which broke his previous career-high.
4. During the 2011-12 season, which team made history as the first NBA team to don camouflaged uniforms?

Answer: Toronto Raptors

The Raptors wore these jerseys in honor of the Canadian military. The team first wore the uniforms on March 21, 2012 in a home game versus the Chicago Bulls.
5. Due to the lockout, several players decided to take their talents overseas. Which of these players did *not* do so during the NBA season?

Answer: Wesley Johnson

J.R. Smith, Kenyon Martin, and Aaron Brooks each played in China for at least part of the lockout. Martin ended up returning midway through the NBA season to sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, and J.R. Smith also made the trip back to the NBA to join the New York Knicks.

Other notable players who missed at least part of the 2011-12 NBA season playing overseas include Wilson Chandler, Andrei Kirilenko, Chris Douglas-Roberts, Josh Powell, Nenad Kristic, and Sasha Vujacic.
6. The Charlotte Bobcats made NBA history at the end of the 2011-12 season by setting a new all-time team record for the lowest win percentage in one season. Who was the head coach for the unfortunate franchise at the time?

Answer: Paul Silas

The Charlotte Bobcats ended the season with a paltry win percentage of 0.106 and a record of 7-56. This surpassed the previous record held by the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers (0.110, 9-73). The Bobcats capped off the regular season with a 23-game losing streak.

The Charlotte Bobcats and Paul Silas parted ways shortly after the team's season ended. Mike Dunlap was selected as the new head coach a few weeks later.
7. Perhaps one of the biggest stories of the year came in February with the rise of Jeremy Lin on the then distraught New York Knicks team. Which of these events did not happen during this period of "Linsanity"?

Answer: Lin is only two rebounds short of a triple-double in his first game as a starter against the Utah Jazz.

In the Knicks' first 23 games of the 2011-12 season, Lin only played a total of 55 minutes, and the team had a rather poor record of only 8-15. Lin made a name for himself after an impressive outing in a win against the Nets, during which Lin had 25 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. Lin then continued to shine while the Knicks lost both Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire to injuries each for a few games.
8. In what was one of the most impressive comebacks in NBA playoff history, one team came back from a 24-point deficit with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter to win by one. Which team pulled off this tremendous feat in the 2012 NBA Playoffs?

Answer: Los Angeles Clippers

This occurred during Game 1 of the first round playoff series between the Clippers and the Memphis Grizzlies. The Clippers at one point were down by as many as 27 points. After being down by 24 with about eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Clippers went straight to work.

The team went on an incredible 26-1 run to take the lead, leaving the Grizzlies scoreless for almost the entire final eight minutes. It wasn't until the final minute that the Grizzlies scored with a jumper from Rudy Gay.

However, Chris Paul was able to capitalize on two clutch free throws, and Gay missed a potential game-winner, leaving the Clippers with an astounding victory.
9. Which of these four higher-seeded teams was upset in the first round in six games?

Answer: Chicago Bulls

The top-seeded Chicago Bulls were upset by the Philadelphia 76ers. The Bulls lost the reigning MVP Derrick Rose to an ACL injury in the final minutes of Game 1, and Bulls center Joakim Noah was forced to miss Games 4, 5, and 6 due to an ankle injury. The 2011-12 76ers became the fifth team to upset a top seed in the first round of the NBA playoffs.
10. The Miami Heat won four games in a row to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder in the 2012 NBA Finals.

Answer: True

The Heat lost Game 1 to the Thunder in Oklahoma City. However, they were able to silence the rowdy Thunder crowd in Game 2 on the road, and the Heat capped off their championship run by winning the following three straight games at home. Thus, the 2011-12 season ended with perhaps its biggest story of the year: three-time MVP LeBron James finally won his first NBA championship.
