Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first decade in the 20th century saw a new league try its hand to equal the long-standing National League. Which league brought eight new teams to baseball in 1901?

Answer: American League

The others were actual baseball leagues, but it was the American League that combined with the National to be called the Major Leagues. The eight teams were the White Sox, who won the first pennant, the Red Sox, Tigers, Athletics, Orioles, Senators, Blues, and Brewers.
2. The 1910s saw the first pitcher in history win the league MVP and Triple Crown in the same season. Who was this Washington Senator?

Answer: Walter Johnson

The others weren't pitchers and would not begin their careers for another 20 years or so. Johnson did both in the 1913 season. He did the duo again in 1924, and helped take the Senators to a World Series championship.
3. In the 1920s, one of the greatest teams emerged by the name of the New York Yankees. In 1927, the team won 110 games in the 154-game season, in part with the help of Babe Ruth, who set a new season home run record by hitting how many?

Answer: 60

Ruth's record stood until 1961, when Yankee Roger Maris hit 61 in his 162-game season.
4. The 1934 St. Louis Cardinals saw a pitching brother combination. One pitcher won 30 games and took the NL MVP, while his brother won another 19 games in the season. Who were these brothers?

Answer: Dean

Dizzy and Paul Dean pitched together for a few seasons on that St. Louis team. Dizzy's 30-win season would be the last in baseball for another 34 years until the Tigers' Denny McLain would win 31 in 1968.
5. The 1940s saw a modern-day record in 1946, when which pitcher struck out 348 batters in the season?

Answer: Bob Feller

None of the others were playing in the 1940s. Feller of the Indians, went 26-15 in the season, but did not come away with the a MVP as Boston's Ted Williams won it. Feller had already won the Triple Crown in 1940. Bob went to his only World Series in 1948, and the Indians won against the Boston Braves. However, Feller's only two game appearances resulted in two losses.

Rube Waddell, playing for the Philadlephia Athletics, struck out 349 batsmen in 1904.
6. One of the highlights in the 1950s was baseball experiencing its first World Series perfect game thrown by a pitcher. Who had the arm on that October 8th day?

Answer: Don Larsen

It was October 8, 1956, and game five of the World Series which pitted the Yankees against the Dodgers. Larsen's blanks helped New York win another title, four games to three. Ironically, Larsen never won more than 11 games in a season, and struck out 100 batters only once in his career.
7. This team in 1966 celebrated their first World Series crown in the team's franchise history. Which team skunked the Dodgers, four games to none?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

The franchise began in 1901 as the Milwaukee Brewers, then moved to St. Louis in 1902 to become the Browns. The Browns never could get it going, and after many years of losses, the team moved to Baltimore in 1954. The 1966 team was managed by Hank Bauer, and the series MVP was Frank Robinson.
8. The 1970s saw which team win three consecutive World Series?

Answer: Oakland Athletics

The Athletics took the titles from 1972-1974. The Reds won two in 1975 and 1976 with their "Big Red Machine". The Dodgers and Mets didn't win any in the 1970s, and the Diamondbacks weren't born yet.
9. Which National Leaguer won three season MVPs in the 1980s?

Answer: Mike Schmidt

The others won only one in the decade. Schmidt won his first when he helped his Philadelphia Phillies to the World Series crown in 1980. He won another in 1981, then again in 1986. Atlanta's Dale Murphy won two MVPs in the decade also.
10. In the 1990s, the New York Yankees made three World Series appearances. The Atlanta Braves made five appearances. Why was the 1994 World Series historical?

Answer: It never happened

The players' strike killed the 1994 World Series. Ironically, it was 90 years earlier when baseball missed their last series. In 1904, the two commissioners of baseball could not agree on the 'ultimate prize', even though one World Series had already been played in 1903.
