Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After many many years, a baseball player in the name of Maury Wills finally broke the season stolen base record by stealing 104, and the first to break the century mark. Wills broke the record of 96 set in which decade?

Answer: 1910s

Wills of the Dodgers broke the almost 50-year old record in 1962. The record belonged to Ty Cobb, who in 1915 with the Detroit Tigers stole 96 bases. Wills' record lasted 12 seasons when Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals stole 118 in 1974.
2. Which decade saw the New York Yankees appear in a dominating eight World Series?

Answer: 1950s

Not only did the Yankees appear in eight World Series in the 1950s, but from 1949-1964, the pinstripes appeared in 14, missing only the 1954 and 1959 seasons. They appeared in five series in the 1930s and 1940s each.
3. Which decade saw the American League St. Louis Browns pack up and move the team to Baltimore to become the Orioles?

Answer: 1950s

In the Browns' final eight seasons, they could finish no better than sixth. 1951 was their season of Eddie Gaedel, the 3'7" pinch-hitter. They lost 100 games in their final season in 1953. In the Orioles' first season in 1954, they also found the century mark in losses.

In 1960, the Orioles took a second place finish under Paul Richards, then in 1966 won their first World Series under the helm of Hank Bauer.
4. Joe Nuxhall appeared in the Major Leagues as a 15-year old pitcher in which decade?

Answer: 1940s

The year was 1944, and baseball fans were shocked to see this Cincinnati Red left-handed kid take the mound. Joe walked five, allowed five earned runs, had a wild pitch, dished up two hits, and had no strikeouts. This all happened in less than one inning. Nuxhall's next appearance was in 1952 at the age of 23. Still with the Reds, he appeared in 37 games going 1-4. Joe retired in 1966 after 16 seasons.
5. In the 1923 World Series, New York Giants' Casey Stengel won two of his team's games with game-winning home runs. The Yankees still won the series, four games to two. Casey later went on to manage the Yankees to 10 World Series appearances. Which decade was 'The Old Perfesser' laid to rest?

Answer: 1970s

Charles Dillon 'Casey' Stengel died in September 1975 at the age of 85. Casey went to three World Series as a player, and won seven at the helm of the Yankees. 1966 saw Mr. Stengel's induction into the Hall of Fame.
6. Had the Manager of the Year award not begun until 1983, Walter Alston would have won many of the awards. Which decade saw his first managerial job with the Dodgers?

Answer: 1950s

Alston took the helm of the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954 replacing Chuck Dressen, and finished second place in the National League. The following season the Dodgers won the World Series over the Yankees. He would take the Dodgers to seven World Series appearances throughout his 23 seasons.

As a player, the first baseman played in only one game, and had only one at-bat in his career. This happened with the Cardinals in 1936. Alston struck out.
7. Longevity ace Minnie Minoso played for 17 seasons in the Major Leagues. Which of the following decades did he not appear in?

Answer: 1930s

Saturnino Orestes Armas Minoso Arrieta debuted as an outfielder with the Cleveland Indians in April 1949. Missing the 1950 season, Minoso played consecutive seasons from 1951-1964. He retired but came back for three games with the White Sox in 1976 as a designated hitter.

He retired again, but then came back for two more games with the White Sox in 1980. Minoso was a seven-time all-star, and led the league three times with triples and stolen bases.
8. Although the Providence Grays' Charlie Radbourn won 59 games in 1884, James 'Pud' Galvin of the Buffalo Bisons led the league by throwing 12 shutouts. Galvin also won 46 games of his own. With a career record of 364-310, Galvin was inducted into the Hall of Fame in which decade?

Answer: 1960s

The Hall did not begin until 1936. Galvin waited 73 years after he retired to have his name enshrined, with the induction taking place in 1965. He never saw it as he died in 1902 at the age of 45.
9. Which decade saw the first Cy Young award be presented?

Answer: 1950s

The first award was given to Brooklyn Dodger Don Newcombe in 1956. From 1956-1966, only one award was presented each season. Beginning in 1967, the award was given to the American and National League. In the first 11 seasons of the single presentation format, Dodger Sandy Koufax won three.
10. Hall of Fame inductee Jimmie Foxx won three season MVPs in which decade?

Answer: 1930s

Foxx was the first player in history to win three MVP awards. He won two with the Athletics in 1932 and 1933, then his third with Red Sox in 1938. Foxx was also the second player in history to hit 500 home runs behind Babe Ruth. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1951, after hitting 534 home runs.
