Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1982 FIFA World Cup was held in Spain. One of the First Round matches was played between Hungary and El Salvador. It wasn't a game of any import; but why is it still remembered?

Answer: Hungary won 10-1 and scored most goals in a single match.

The match was the second game of Group 3 and was played at El Nuevo Estadio in Elche. Hungary was a very good team, in fact it had already played two World Cup Finals (in 1938 and 1954 losing both of them). On the other hand Spain 1982 was El Salvador's second appearance at the World Cup finals (the other one had been in Mexico 1970), and it was also one of the weakiest teams of the Cup. El Salvador lost the match 10-1.

The previous record score of 9-0 was achieved twice: Hungary v South Korea (1954) and Yugoslavia v Zaire (1974).
2. During 1966 FIFA World Cup in England, Argentina were playing the hosts for a place in semi-finals. During the match Argentinaīs captain was sent off by the referee, but instead of leaving the field he sat down for a while on the Queen's red carpet and he became famous. What was his name?

Answer: Antonio Ubaldo Rattín

During 1966 World Cup held in England, Argentina participated in Group B where it ended in second place behind West Germany and qualified for next round (Spain and Switzerland were eliminated). In the quarter-finals vs. England the German referee Rudolf Kreitlen sent off Rattín apparently because he had insulted him (that was hard to believe because the referee didnīt speak Spanish). Rattin got very angry and didn't want to leave the field becasue he wanted to get an explanation from the referee, but as he couldn't talk to him he sat down for a while on the Queen's red carpet; until he left the field escorted by several policemen.
3. The Jules Rimet Trophy was the first FIFA World Cup trophy. The first country to win the World Cup for a third time (not consecutive) would be able to keep the trophy forever. Who won their third World Cup in Mexico 1970 and got to keep the trophy?

Answer: Brazil

In Mexico 1970 the final match was played between Brazil and Italy. That was a special game because the winner would keep the Jules Rimet Trophy forever as both teams had previously won the World Cup twice (Italy had won the tournament in 1934 and 1938 and Brazil had won in 1958 and 1962).

The score was 1-1 at half time; Brazil scored three times during the secnd half defeating Italy 4-1.
4. Where was the first FIFA World Cup held?

Answer: Uruguay

The first FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930. As it was the inaugural World Cup there was no qualification procedure and every team affiliated to FIFA was invited to take part of the Cup. Thirteen teams accepted the invitation and were divided in four groups (one of the groups had four teams and the others three).

The final match was played between Argentina and Uruguay in Motevideo on 30th July. When the second half started Argentina was winning 2-1, but Uruguay scored three times and won 4-2.
5. Argentina won the World Cup in 1978 and again in 1986, so it had the privilege to play the opening matches at the following world cups (in the 1982 and 1990). What did both games have in common for Argentina?

Answer: Argentina lost both matches 1-0.

In 1982 Argentina played against Belgium at the Camp Nou, Barcelona and lost 1-0. In 1990 Cameroon defeated Argentina one more time 1-0.
Despite being defeated by Cameroon at the opening match of the tournament, Argentina qualified in third position in its Group behind Cameroon and Romania and then progressed through the knock-out rounds to reach the Final, where it lost 1-0 to West Germany.
(there were six groups in the first round of Italy 1990; first and second from each progressed, plus the four best third-placed teams)
6. African and Asian teams have generally been the weakest teams in all World Cup finals tournaments. However, on one occasion an Afican team qualified for quarter-finals and nearly reached the semi-finals. Which country was the first African team in World Cup history that nearly qualified for the semi-finals?

Answer: Cameroon

At the 1990 Italy world cup Cameroon surprised the whole world when it defeated the reigning champions Argentina 1-0 in the opening match of the tournament. That wasnīt a simple stroke of luck as Cameroon went on to finsh in first place in their group.

They then played Colombia and won again (2-1 aet). In their quarter-final they played against the powerful England team and were leading 2-1; but seven minutes prior to the end of the game the referee awarded a controversial penalty kick to England and Gary Lineker drew the match.

In extra time England was awarded a second penalty kick that Gary Lineker again converted and Cameroon lost 3-2. In 2002 World Cup, 12 years after Cameroonīs achievement, another African team nearly reached the semi-finals - on that occasion Senegal was defeated 1-0 in extra time by Turkey in the quarter-finals.
7. The 2002 World Cup was amazing because some strong teams like Argentina and the reigning champion France were eliminated at First Round; and it also was the first time two Asian countries reached the semi-finals. Which two Asian teams played in the semi-finals?

Answer: South Korea and Turkey

The 2002 World Cup was held by South Korea and Japan, and was the first time two countries shared the organization of a finals tournament. South Korea prgressed as the winner of Group D and then defeated Italy and Spain, two of the best teams of the cup.

In their semi-finals they played against Germany and lost 1-0. Turkey ended the first round in second place in their group behind Brazil. In the Second Round and quarter-finals they defeated Japan and Senegal respectively by the same score (1-0).

They were beaten one more time by Brazil 1-0 in their semi-final.
8. In 2010 the World Cup was held in South Africa. Italy were the defending champion from 2006 Germany while France were the losing finalist from 2006. They played in Groups F and A respectively, but what happened to both teams?

Answer: They didnīt win a single match and were eliminated in First Round.

The 2010 World Cup was a completely failure for both teams. Italy was the previous champion and France the runners-up (Italy had won the cup over France by penalty shoot-out in Germany 2006), but both teams were eliminated during the First Round of the Cup.
9. All world cups finished with a final match between two teams, except one. Which World Cup finshed without a final; it finished with four teams in the final stage of the Cup?

Answer: Brazil 1950

Brazil 1950 was the first and only World Cup in history in which it was decided to play a final stage with four teams instead of a one-match final. The four teams that reached to the final stage were Spain, Brazil, Uruguay and Sweden. Spain and Sweden lost two matches so Brazil and Uruguay were the only teams that could win.

They played the last match on 16th July 1950 at Maracana Stadium; ten minutes before the end of the game it was a 1-1 draw and Brazil were champions (on goal difference over the final group matches) but then Ghiggia scored for Uruguay and Brazil lost the game, and the cup.

This sudden and unexpected Brazilian defeat surprised the whole world and it's still remembered as the "Maracanazo" because Uruguay won the match at Maracana Stadium.
10. 1974 World Cup was held in West Germany. Brazil and Zaire were playing a match in the First Round when the referee gave a free kick for Brazil. At that moment Zaire's defender Mwepu Ilunga ran out from his team's defensive wall and became famous. Why was that?

Answer: He kicked away the ball before it was in play.

Mwepu Ilunga ran out the defensive wall and kicked away the ball because he thought it was a valid movement. Of course that's not true and a defender can't kick the ball until is in play. This demostrated that Zaire's players did not know soccerīs basic rules; in fact they lost their three group matches without scoring a single goal.
