Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first player to score a goal in the A-League?

Answer: Carl Veart

Veart scored for Adelaide against Newcastle in the first game of the A-league- on Friday 26th August 2005, in a 1-0 win for Adelaide. The other three options scored later in the weekend.
2. October 2006: Why did Adelaide coach John Kosmina take his infamous choke hold on Melbourne Victory's Kevin Muscat?

Answer: Muscat pushed him off his chair

Muscat pushed Kosmina off his chair whilst rushing to retieve a ball for a throw-in at the Telstra Dome in October 2006. Muscat was given a two match suspension for the incident, whilst Kosmina received a four match sideline ban. The match finished Melbourne v Adelaide 0-1.
3. Who was the first person to both play in and coach a team in the A-League?

Answer: Ian Ferguson

Scottish international Ian Ferguson (he played for Rangers during the 1990s) made three appearances for the Central Coast Mariners in the league's first season (2005-06), before going on to coach North Queensland 2009-10) and then Perth Glory. Culina and Vidmar never played in the A-League, and Bosnich had not even retired from football (he was still playing at Sydney Olympic when Ferguson first coached North Queensland in 2009).
4. What was notable about Perth defender Jamie Harnwell's involvement in his side's 2-2 draw with Gold Coast United in September 2009?

Answer: He played in goal.

There were less than ten minutes left when Perth keeper Tando Velaphi was concussed with the score at 2-2. With all 3 substitutes used, Harnwell was left to play out the game in goal.
5. Who was the first player to play for all three foundation New South Wales clubs in A-League games?

Answer: Sasho Petrovski

Petrovski played for Sydney FC in seasons 1 and 2 (2005-6 and 06-07); Central Coast Mariners in seasons 3 and 4 (2007-08 and 08-09); and Newcastle Jets in seasons 5 and 6 (2009-10 and 10-11). Spencer signed for all three, but only played Asian Champions League matches for Sydney. Nash signed for all three, but did not make appearances for Central Coast. Musialik did not arrive at his third NSW club - the Central Coast - until 2011.
6. For which of these players was a transfer fee paid by an A-League club?

Answer: Carlos Hernandez (Melbourne Victory)

Kewell and Yorke were free agents before moving to the A-League, and so required no transfer fee. Emerton's former club Blackburn Rovers agreed to release him for free. For Hernandez, the Victory paid an undisclosed fee to Costa Rican club LD Alajuelense.
7. Who was the first goalkeeper to score an A-League goal?

Answer: Danny Vukovic

It was deep in injury time in the final round of the 2010-11 regular season when Wellington Phoenix were awarded a penalty against North Queensland. With the result already decided (they were up 2-1) keeper Vukovic stepped up to take the kick, which he blasted into the top corner. He had hit the crossbar from a kick out of his own end only weeks before.
8. What was unusual about Melbourne Victory's 6th goal in their 6-0 defeat of Adelaide United in the second ever A-League grand final on 18th February 2007?

Answer: It was not scored by Archie Thompson.

Having already scored five, it was somewhat surprising when Archie Thompson did not score the 6th goal! Instead, it was Kristian Sarkies, who slotted home from the edge of the area.
9. What do Alex Brosque, Milton Rodriguez, Mitchell Duke, Daniel and Shane Smeltz have in common?

Answer: They scored in their A-League debuts.

Smeltz also scored in his debut for Gold Coast United (after scoring in his debut for Wellington Phoenix) - meaning he had scored in the first rounds of the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.
10. Who was the first World Cup winning player to play in the A-League?

Answer: Romario

Romario was in the Brazil team that won the 1994 FIFA World Cup, scoring five goals in the tournament and winning the Golden Ball award for best player at the 1994 World Cup. He played for Adelaide United about a year before 2002 World Cup winner Juninho played for Sydney FC. Littbarski, whilst a World Cup winner (1990) did not play in the A-League - he coached Sydney FC in the league's first season (2005-06). Jardel was not selected for the 2002 World Cup winning Brazil squad.
