1. The first African-American manager in Major League Baseball helmed an American League team. This same person was also the first African-American to manage a National League team. Who was it?

Answer: Frank Robinson

In 1975, Frank took over the Cleveland Indians for three seasons. From there he was the first NL manager with the Giants for four seasons. In 1988, he managed the Baltimore Orioles for four seasons, winning the Manager of Year award in 1989. He then managed the Expos/Nationals for five seasons. Robinson was a Hall of Fame great player, winning the Rookie of the Year award, two MVPs, and batting for a Triple Crown.
2. Who was the first pitcher to win 20 games in a Major League season?

Answer: Don Newcombe

Newcombe went 20-9 with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1951. He went an amazing 20-5 in 1955, but still finished seventh on the MVP list. In 1956, he won another 20 with his 27-7 record. For his efforts, he the NL MVP.
3. Who was the first African-American to play for the Chicago Cubs?

Answer: Ernie Banks

Ernie was a future gold mine. The Cubs signed him in 1953. Winning two NL MVPs, a Gold Glove, and hitting 512 home runs, Banks was affectionately known as "Mr. Cub" in Chicago. The Hall of Fame inducted him in 1977.
4. Jackie Robinson signed the first contract to play for a Major League farm team in 1946. Which team was it?

Answer: Montreal Royals

Robinson's first game was on April 18th at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. Jackie had three singles and a home run in his first game. When joining the Dodgers in 1947, he began his career going 0-for-20, then rebounded enough to win the Rookie of the Year award.

Answer: Emmett Ashford

Emmett debuted in the American League in 1965. He retired after only six seasons in 1970. Ashford died in 1980 of a heart attack.

Bankhead joined Jackie Robinson with the Dodgers in 1947. Dan's first four games were as a relief pitcher, going 0-0. His first at-bat resulted in a home run, the only one of his career. Bankhead played for only three seasons in the Majors.

Answer: Larry Doby

Doby was the first African-American to join the American League. He signed with the Indians in 1947. Doby won the first of his two home run crowns in 1952 by hitting 32. 1954 was his other crown, hitting another 32. Larry was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1998.
8. Who was the first to win the Cy Young award?

Answer: Don Newcombe

Newcombe won the very-first Cy Young awarded presented in 1956. He also won the NL MVP in that season with the Dodgers. Newcombe went 27-7 in the season, and won the inaugural award over Sal Maglie, Whitey Ford, and Warren Spahn.

Answer: Elston Howard

Eight seasons after the arrival of Jackie Robinson with the Dodgers, Elston Howard began his career with the Yankees. Howard was first used as an outfielder, and because the Yankees were deep with talent in the outfield, they slowly groomed him as a catcher. Elston was the AL MVP in 1963, winning the award over Al Kaline, Whitey Ford, and Harmon Killebrew.

After 14 seasons, Howard retired in 1968. He died in 1980.
10. Jackie Robinson was the first National League African-American to win the Rookie of the Year award in 1947. Who was the first in the American League to win the MVP award?

Answer: Frank Robinson

Robinson won it in his first year with the Orioles in 1966, after being traded from the Reds. He batted for the Triple Crown in 1966.
