Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who made the final out in the infamous 1919 Black Sox World Series?

Answer: Joe Jackson

The series went eight games with the Reds winning five games to three over the White Sox. In the final game played at Comiskey Park on October 9, the White Sox were down 10-5 going into the bottom of the ninth. Reds pitcher Hod Eller who went the distance, got Jackson, nicknamed "Shoeless Joe" to ground out to the second baseman who tossed it to first baseman Jake Daubert to begin the bitter-sweet celebration.

2. The great Nolan Ryan began his career as a New York Met in 1966. In December 1971, the Mets traded four players including Ryan to the California Angels for only one player in return. Who was that Angel player?

Answer: Jim Fregosi

Documented as one of the biggest hindsight trades in history, Ryan went to the Angels along with Frank Estrada, Don Rose, and Leroy Stanton. Fregosi was a shortstop who just finished his 11th season. He had led the league in triples with 13 in 1968, and that was it. He was never in the top five for the MVP and had a .233 average with the Mets. Nolan finished his career with a record seven no-hitters and 5714 strikeouts.

3. Who was the first-ever shortstop to win a Gold Glove Award?

Answer: Roy McMillan

The Rawlings Sporting Goods company started the award in 1957. In that season, it was given to each fielding position Major League wide, one per position. In 1958, they presented it at each position in each league. McMillan was a Cincinnati Red in 1957, and played in 10 of his 16 seasons with them. The following two seasons, Roy would win it again for the National League presentations.

4. What was New York state's first professional and sanctioned league baseball team named?

Answer: New York Mutuals

The Mutuals were one of nine teams who started the first-ever organized league, the National Association in 1871. They were led by manager-third baseman Bob Ferguson. The team finished in fifth place behind the pennant-winning Philadelphia Athletics. When the league folded, the Mutuals team did also. A new franchise with the same name began in the new National League in 1876.

5. Which season saw Major League Baseball play its 150,000th game, combined between the American and National Leagues?

Answer: 1999

The Major Leagues surpassed the milestone just into the 1999 season. The total games breakdown by each season were:
1901: 1,110
1910: 12,019
1920: 24,085
1930: 36,408
1940: 48,721
1950: 61,099
1960: 73,471

6. Who was the first-ever team to win a postseason game as a wildcard entry?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

The leagues split into three divisions in 1994, but there were no playoffs at the end of the season due to the player strike. It was two seasons later when the Orioles, who finished second in the AL East behind the Yankees, defeated the Indians in the ALDS. The Yankees put the brakes on the Orioles by beating them four games to one in the ALCS.

7. The 1963 National League MVP Award was presented to Sandy Koufax of the Dodgers. In one of the biggest controversies concerning the MVP process, who beat Hank Aaron for the MVP runner-up spot in 1963?

Answer: Dick Groat

Hank Aaron finished third behind Groat, despite having the same number of at-bats (631), the same number of hits (201), the same batting average (.319), but Aaron hit 38 home runs more, scored 36 more runs, and had 57 more RBIs than Groat. Aaron still finished third.

The shortstop Groat was in his first season with the Cardinals after playing in nine with the Pirates. The same issues occurred when Groat won the 1960 NL MVP while Willie Mays had greater numbers also. Pirate Don Hoak finished as runner-up in 1960, leaving Mays third with Willie's numbers bettering both. The photo is of properly installed tile grout.
8. How many total teams were there in Major League Baseball in the 1961 season?

Answer: 18

The big leagues had seen eight teams in each league since Major League Baseball began in 1901. With the addition of the Los Angeles Angels and the new Washington Senators franchise in 1961, the American League went to 10 teams while the National League still had eight. The new Senators replaced the old franchise that moved to Minnesota to become the Twins.
Pictured are three sixes which equal 18.
9. Which Hall of Fame player in the 1920s ended a World Series by being caught stealing?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The 1926 series pitted the powerful Yankees against the St. Louis Cardinals. In the deciding game seven, the Yankees were down 3-2 with two outs in the ninth inning. Cardinal Pete Alexander walked Babe Ruth which brought slugger Bob Meusel to the plate. One swing of the bat would win it all for the Yankees, but instead, and without any sign given, Ruth tried to steal second base and was gunned down by catcher Bob O'Farrell. Game over.

10. The 2011 Chicago Cubs franchise was around when baseball began in the National Association in 1871. The franchise had many greats throughout its history. Which of these Chicago players was the first to have their jersey number retired by the franchise?

Answer: Ernie Banks

In-between were the 1958 and 1959 NL MVP awards, 512 home runs, and 14 All-Star games. The franchise retired his number 14 on August 22, 1982.
