Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In Pittsburgh's first year in the National Football League, what was their team name?

Answer: Pirates

The Pittsburgh franchise was founded by Art Rooney in 1933. They were called the Pittsburgh Pirates until the 1940 season when they changed to the Steelers.
2. For how many seasons did the Pittsburgh club merge with another team?

Answer: 2

Because World War II caused roster issues, the Pittsburgh Steelers merged in 1943 with Philadelphia. They were call the Phil-Pitt Eagles but were known as the Steagles. In 1944 they joined with the Chicago Cardinals and were called Card-Pitt, also Car-Pitts or Carpets. They were winless that season. In 1945 they went back to being the Pittsburgh Steelers.
3. Where did the Pittsburgh team first call home?

Answer: Forbes Field

Pittsburgh played over 30 seasons at Forbes Field until 1963, when they moved to Pitt Stadium for several seasons. Their next long-term home was Three Rivers Stadium. They played there from 1970 to 2000 before moving to Heinz Field in 2001.
4. Who was the inaugural coach of the Pittsburgh franchise?

Answer: Forrest Douds

Forrest Douds was the first coach of the Pittsburgh franchise. He only coached one season (1933) and went 3-6-2. This was his only professional coaching position.
5. What are the Steelers main team colors?

Answer: Black and gold

Except for two very early seasons, black and gold have been the main team colors for this franchise throughout its history. The city's professional baseball (Pittsburgh Pirates) and hockey team (Pittsburgh Penguins) also have the same team colors. Black and gold are the colors of Pittsburgh's city flag.
6. Prior to the AFL-NFL merger, how many times did the Pittsburgh franchise make the playoffs?

Answer: 1

The AFL-NFL merger was complete for the 1970 season. Prior to this, the Pittsburgh club only made the playoffs once. It was in the 1947 season and they lost the Eastern Divisional Playoffs to the Eagles.
7. After the AFL-NFL merger, what season was the first for the Steelers to make the playoffs?

Answer: 1972

After the 1970 merger, the Steelers made it all the way to the Conference Championship in 1972 only to lose to the Miami Dolphins 21-17 on December 31, 1972. If it is any consolation to the Steeler fans, 1972 was the undefeated season for the Miami Dolphins (who went on to win the Super Bowl, played in January 1973).
