Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The sport of 'lawn tennis' in fact derives from 'real' or 'royal tennis'. Also called jeu de paume in the Middle Ages. Which of these is NOT a characteristic difference with present-day lawn tennis?

Answer: balls are softer

Real tennis (also called court tennis) is now played at fewer than 30 courts. One of them is the court once used by King Henry VIII in his palace at Hampton.
2. What sport had to be made more acceptable to civilised people by the introduction of the so-called Queensberry rules?

Answer: boxing

Marquess of Queensberry was the one Oscar Wilde got into trouble with. Anyway, Mr Wilde would probably agree that in spite of those softening rules and even without taking Mike Tyson's cannibalistic practices into account, boxing is still today not a sport for sissies.
3. Who was the longest reigning chess world champion until now?

Answer: Emmanuel Lasker, Germany

Lasker's reign lasted from 1894 till 1921. Botwinnik was world champion 1948-1957, 1958-60 and 1961-63. Smyslov ruled for a very brief period, from 1957-58. Bobby Fisher felt he had had enough of the burden of his crown after being world champion from 1969 till 1972.
4. What sport got its name from the French way of warning your opponent he should be ready to catch the ball?

Answer: tennis

Tennis has been said to derive from: Tenez, or 'take this'.
5. What sport derives its name from its being played with a hooked stick?

Answer: hockey

One can play hooky (to play truant), but that's not considered a regular sport. The name Polo comes from Tibetan 'pholo' which literally means: ball game. Hockey: played with a stick hooked at one end. Galway Statutes of 1527 mentions 'hockie stickes or staves', which has been read as hooky sticks.
6. Which ex-GDR woman athlete won the same Olympic event TWICE for (reunited) Germany a.first in 1992 b.then in 2000 ?

Answer: Heike Drechsler

Drechsler had won the longjump for the Democratic Republic of Germany in 1992 (East Germany), and won it again for the German Federal Republic in 2000. Ulrike Meyfahrt was a highjumper for the GFR, Katharina Witt was an artistic iceskater. And Gertrude Baumann?? Well Heike Drechsler's coach was a Mr Baumann, but there is no news yet of a Gertrude Baumann winning gold medals.

Straweight is a maximum of 49 kgm (108 lb), junior flyweight is a maximum of 51 kgm (112 lb), and flyweight is a maximum of 52 kgm (115 lb). The next class is bantamweight.

The WBO and IBF introduced Atomweight in 2007 at 46.3kgm (102lb). The WBA call it Light Minimumweight.
