Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Compared to the bows used throughout the ages, the compound bow is a comparatively recent 20th century invention. Which one of these features improves its accuracy by providing an extra reference point while aiming?

Answer: Peep sight

The peep sight is a small plastic doughnut located in the string of many compound bows. At full draw, the archer looks through the peep sight, in addition to the normal bow sight located on the riser (grip).
2. All but one of the following items in the modern archer's tackle box have protective and/or safety functions. Which one?

Answer: Bow square

The tab is worn on the fingers of the drawing hand as protection against the string. A false string is the safest way of bracing (putting the string on) a bow. The arm guard protects the tender inner forearm of the bow hand against string burn. The bow square is simply a measuring device for brace height, tiller and nock point placement.
3. Robin of Lockley was the undisputed master of the longbow. Of which material were the shafts of Mr Hood's arrows made?

Answer: wood

Wood is a remarkable fletching material, and was only surpassed by aluminium and carbon fiber. Glass fiber arrows are strong but heavy, and are suitable for bow fishing.
4. Arrows intended for hunting purposes are usually fitted with which of the following types of point?

Answer: Broadhead

The field point is used for target archery and is of simple conical design. Broadheads are made up of two or three triangular blades, and are normally not allowed on target archery ranges due to their devastating effect on the target buttresses. Slicers and shredders are kitchen appliances.
5. Archery is rich with jargon, and inevitably some of the terminology spilled over into mainstream English. Which of the following expressions originated from crossbow archery?

Answer: Pick a quarrel

Literally to select a bolt in preparation for battle.
6. From which characteristic does the recurve bow derive its name?

Answer: The limb ends curve forward

The interesting limb shape contributes to the speed of the arrow. The recurve bow is also known as the Olympic bow. Fitted with a sight, stabilizers and a good archer, the recurve bow is extremely accurate over the Olympic distance of 70 meters. The less said about the other three theories the better!
7. The bow and arrow are of special importance to which martial art?

Answer: Kyudo

A Kyudo bow is instantly recognizable by its long upper and much shorter lower limb.
8. Bowyer and author of the book, "Become the Arrow", Byron Ferguson, is known for his skill with which type of weapon?

Answer: Traditional bare bow

The bare bow is not fitted with a sight, generally making it harder to shoot than sighted bows. Nevertheless, a televised arrow loosed by Mr Ferguson flew clean through the finger opening of an expensive diamond ring.

The atlatl is essentially a stick used to propel an arrow by lending more leverage to the arm in a similar way one would use a rod to cast the bait when fishing. It is though to pre-date the bow. Needless to say, crack atlatl shots are in short supply.
9. Physics! A lighter arrow will always leave a given bow at a higher velocity than a heavier arrow.

Answer: True

The lighter arrow has less inertia and will experience greater acceleration by the bowstring. The fastest bows are capable of arrow speeds around 320 fps (220 mph). There are limits to the minimum arrow weight that a bow can safely shoot.
10. Belt, ground, back and bow are all different types of what?

Answer: Quivers

Hunters prefer the bow-mounted quiver. Field archers and traditionalists like the back quivers. Target archers nearly always use either the belt quivers or a ground quiver. The latter can also do service as a bow hanger.
