Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 2005 Braves featured a lot of new rookies. On May 21st, which rookie pitcher got his first big league win against the world champion Boston Red Sox?

Answer: Kyle Davies

This was actually Davies first big league start and the only game the Braves won in that series. Davies was the first of many Braves rookies to impress in 2005, and many believe that this game was the beginning of the Braves making another run at a division title.
2. Which two players represented the Braves in the 2005 All-Star game?

Answer: Andruw Jones and John Smoltz

Andruw hit a long home run in the game, but Smoltz was the pitcher of record for the losing National League squad.
3. The Braves' bullpen struggled all season. One of the biggest problems was they could not find a solid closer. Which closer led the team in saves?

Answer: Chris Reitsma

Reitsma finished with 15 saves, Kolb had 11 saves, and Farnsworth had 10 saves. Smoltz returned to the starting rotation in 2005 after 3 successful seasons as the Braves closer.
4. Many of the Braves had a great season. However, only one of these Braves walked away with a postseason award. Who was it?

Answer: Bobby Cox - Manager of the Year

Jones finished second in the MVP race. Francoeur finished 3rd in the ROY race. Smoltz did not receive any votes in the Cy Young race.
Bobby Cox won his award in a landslide. It was his 4th time winning the award. AL-1985, NL-1991, 2004, and 2005.
5. On August 16th against the LA Dodgers, John Smoltz achieved a milestone in strikeouts. What number did he reach that night?

Answer: 2500 career

Smoltz left the game after the 7th inning with a 4-3 lead. Unfortunately, Reitsma blew the save and the Braves lost the game 6-4.
6. Julio Franco was getting up there in years, but he kept playing like a young man. What record did the Julio break in 2005?

Answer: Oldest player to hit a grand slam

Julio hit the grand slam against the Diamondbacks on August 13th. He was the second oldest player in postseason history and the oldest non-pitcher in MLB history also.
7. Which Braves rookie went deep off of Roger Clemens in game two of the NLDS giving the Braves a lead and the eventual win?

Answer: Brian McCann

It was the only game that the Braves won in the 2005 postseason as the Astros beat the Braves in 4 games.
8. Which Braves rookie was drafted in July of 2005, was called up in September 2005, and then made the postseason roster?

Answer: Joey Devine

The awful Braves' bullpen allowed Devine to reach the majors almost immediately. The promising young rookie was less than impressive however, finishing with an ERA over 12. He also has the dubious honor of giving up the 18th-inning walk off home run to Chris Burke of the Astros in the final game of the NLDS.
9. Jeff Francoeur was another rookie who made a big splash in Atlanta in 2005. Players around the league especially noticed his strong outfield arm as he finished second in the league in outfield assists. How many did he have?

Answer: 13

Frenchy finished behind the Mets' Cliff Floyd despite playing in only 70 games in 2005. Floyd played in 150 games in 2005.
10. The Braves had won their division for an unprecedented consecutive number of years. Including 2005, how many years in a row had the Braves won a division title?

Answer: 14

Another year, another division title. The Braves had won their division every year since 1991, with the exception of the strike shortened year 1994, where there was no division winner.
