Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bobby Cox took over managing duties from which man during the 1990 season?

Answer: Russ Nixon

Russ Nixon managed the Braves for 121 games in 1988, 161 games in 1989, and 65 games in 1990, when Bobby Cox took over for him. He also managed the Cincinnati Reds in 1982 and 1983. Nixon's playing days were from 1957-1968 with the Indians, Red Sox, and Twins.
2. Who was the only Brave in 1991 to hit more than 30 home runs?

Answer: Ron Gant

Ron Gant hit 32 homers in 1991. Gant also had 105 RBI's and 34 stolen bases that year, making for a pretty solid year.
3. Which team did the Braves beat in the 1992 National League Championship Series?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

John Smoltz won the MVP of this series with a 2-0 record and a 2.66 ERA. Tim Wakefield of the Pirates, also had a 2-0 record during this series.
4. The 1993 season was possibly the greatest pennant race in the 1990s. This was also Greg Maddux's first season with the Braves. What was Maddux's record that helped the Braves beat the Giants for the pennant?

Answer: 20-10

Maddux's 20-10 record helped the Braves win the pennant in 1993. The Braves secured the pennant on the last day of the year when the Dodgers beat the Giants 12-1. Unfortunately for the Braves, they lost to the Phillies in the National League Championship Series.
5. The strike shortened season of 1994 was a sad year for most baseball fans. Which team was in first place in the National League East at the end of the season?

Answer: Montreal Expos

The Expos had a six game lead over the Braves before the strike ended the season after only 114 games. Unfortunately for the Expos, the strike cancelled the World Series, thus ending the one of best chances the team ever had to play in the Fall Classic.
6. 1995 saw the Braves win the World Series for the first time since the team moved to Atlanta in 1966. Which team did the Braves beat in the Division Series?

Answer: Colorado Rockies

The Braves beat the Rockies three games to one, to move on and face the Cincinnati Reds in the League Championship Series. The Braves met the Indians in the World Series in which they won four games to two. Although David Justice was a huge player in that series, winning the decisive game with his solo homer, Tom Glavine was awarded Series MVP with his 2-0 record and miniscule 1.29 ERA.
7. The Braves lost the 1996 World Series to the New York Yankees. At least they had the National League Cy Young winner playing for them. Who was it?

Answer: John Smoltz

The Braves certainly had their fair share of Cy Young Winners in the 1990s. Glavine won in 1991 and 1998. Maddux won in 1993, 1994, and 1995. Smoltz won in 1996. Maddux also won the award in 1992 as a member of the Chicago Cubs.
8. Which pitcher had the most team wins in 1997?

Answer: Denny Neagle

Denny Neagle, who came over from the Pirates in 1996, won 20 games in 1997. That is the only year in the 1990s that a player other than Glavine, Smoltz, or Maddux, led the team in wins.
9. The Braves had six All-Star players in 1998. Which player was not on that All-Star team?

Answer: John Smoltz

John Smoltz was left off the roster in 1998, although he had a 17-3 record with a 2.90 ERA. That .850 winning percentage is usually enought to make you an All-Star, but Bobby Cox had to leave him off the team in favor of Glavine and Maddux.
10. The Braves were swept in the World Series in 1999 by the Yankees. How many times during the 90s were the Braves beaten by the American League in the World Series?

Answer: 4

The Braves were beaten by the Twins in 1991, the Blue Jays in 1992, and the Yankees in 1996 and 1999. The Braves did have the one victory over the Indians in 1995.
