Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. His International debut came on 10th November 1998 against Pakistan in Lahore. Although he was born in England he chose to play for Australia. His nickname is 'Roy'.

Answer: Andrew Symonds

Andrew Symonds was involved in sledging against Harbhajan Singh (India) during the 2nd Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on 2nd January 2008. Singh was alleged to have called Symonds a 'Monkey'. Singh received a 3-match ban. He was the second most expensive player of the Indian Premier League in 2008-09, playing for the Rajasthan Royals.

The other 3 players are born in England and have actually played for England.
2. This Sagittarian was called the 'Fruitfly'. He was mostly famous for sledging during the early 1990s. Can you guess the Aussie?

Answer: Mervyn Hughes

"The National Hero", as we call him. His most notable sledging came in the year 1991 during the Adelaide Test against Javed Miandad of Pakistan. Miandad called Hughes a "Fat Bus Conductor". Hughes dismissed Miandad the very next ball and replied "Tickets Please" while passing by the batsman. Now that's exactly how you reply in cricket. :-)
3. This Victorian was one of the greatest leg spinners of all time. We often refer to him as 'Hollywood'. He had a bowling average of 25.41 in Tests. He played his last Test on 2nd January 2007.

Answer: Shane Warne

Shane Warne is a legend. Despite the ups and downs in his professional, as well as private, career, he has kept his cool and taken wickets consistently. Warne tested positive for drugs and had a one-year ban imposed on him prior to the start of the 2003 World Cup.

But being the Magician he is, had a great 2006-07 Ashes series against England and retired on a high note. He became the first cricketer to reach the 700 wickets milestone in Test Cricket.
4. This Aussie was regarded as the fastest bowler in the world, with one ball clocked at 99.7 mph (160.45 kph) and rumoured to have broken the 100 mph barrier.

Answer: Jeff Thomson

Jeff 'Thommo' Thomson teamed up with Dennis Lillee to form the world's most dominant pair of pace attack in the 1970s. The other three players are pace bowlers too but none of them crossed the 160 kph mark.
5. He debuted on 29th January 1971 against England and was rated as the outstanding fast bowler of the generation. He held the record for most wickets in Tests (355) until his retirement in 1984.

Answer: Dennis Lillee

In a 1976-77 encounter between New Zealand vs. Australia, you could see the rarest fielding position in history with Dennis Lillie bowling with 9 slips. As New Zealand had only one wicket left with Peter Petherick and Ewen Chatfield at the crease (who by the way were not the best of batsmen), this field was the best option.

Despite the slips, Peter Petherick was bowled by Lillee for 1. Australia needed just 28 runs to win and they chased down the score with 10 wickets in hand.
6. We call him the 'Unit'. Although he retired from International Cricket on 13th January 2009, he went on to play in the Indian Premier League. He was termed as a 'Superhuman' due to his outstanding consistency in the Second Season of the IPL (2009), scoring 572 runs in 12 innings at an average of 52.00. Who might this be?

Answer: Matthew Hayden

He got the Orange Cap for the leading run scorer in the Second Season of the IPL. He is a One-Man Army! :-) He scored 1,000 runs in a calendar year on 5 separate occasions.
7. He is nicknamed 'Pigeon'. His test debut was on 12th November 1993 vs. New Zealand. He was involved in sledging against Ramnaresh Sarwan of West Indies. Who is he?

Answer: Glenn McGrath

Glenn McGrath has extremely thin legs resembling that of pigeon-legs, hence his nickname 'Pigeon'. He was the most economical bowler for the Delhi Daredevils in the first season of the Indian Premier League.
8. This great batsman from Australia led the Aussies between 1975 and 1983. His batting average in Tests was 53.86. Who is this cricketing legend?

Answer: Greg Chappell

Greg Chappell coached Team India between 20th May 2005 and 4th April 2007. Unfortunately, it didn't go well for Chappell and resulted in India's early exit from the 2007 ICC World Cup.
9. He's the coolest of them all. Born on 2nd June 1965 in NSW, we call him the 'Iceman'. He has a twin brother who also played for Australia.

Answer: Steve Waugh

He got the nickname 'Iceman' because he remained calm even in stressful situations. Steve Waugh holds the world record for leading Australia to 16 consecutive Test victories while breaking West Indies' streak of 12 consecutive Test match wins. Steve Waugh is four minutes older than his twin brother, Mark Waugh.
10. This cricketing legend great holds the record for the best Test batting average at 99.94. We often refer to him as 'The Don'.

Answer: Donald Bradman

You got it! :) Born on 27th August 1908 in Bowral, NSW; he is the best thing that ever happened to Australian cricket. The English devised a new bodyline attack (short Balls aiming for the body of the batsmen so as to dismiss him) against Sir Donald Bradman in 1932.
