Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which former Australian batsman said the following quote during the 1932-33 "Bodyline" series: "There are two teams out there, one is trying to play cricket and the other is not"?

Answer: Bill Woodfull

The "Bodyline" series would be a good one to forget about if you support Australia in cricket and if you have heard about this series. Bill Woodfull got hit in the ribs and Bert Oldfield (former Australian wicketkeeper) suffered a fractured skull from a Harold Larwood bouncer. Before the 1970-71 Ashes series in Australia, this series was the last time that England regained the Ashes on Australian soil.
2. In the first innings of the Centenary Test (March 1977) between Australia and England, no Australian batsman reached 50. Which Australian batsman was closest to making 50 and what was the score?

Answer: Greg Chappell, 40

Greg Chappell was the highest scorer on either side in the first innings. He was also Derek Underwood's 250th test wicket in this match. Australia only made 138 in its first innings. Funny enough, everyone thought that England would have had a massive first innings lead, but unbelievably, they only scored 95 in their first innings being behind by 43 runs.
3. Who was the first Australian batsman to score triple century in a Test match against England, which year was it, where was the venue and what was the score?

Answer: Don Bradman, 1930, Leeds, 334

Bradman's 334 in Leeds beat the record of 325 set by England's Andrew Sandham against the West Indies.
4. In the tied test in the 1960-61 series between Australia and the West Indies, how was Ian Meckiff dismissed?

Answer: Run out

Joe Solomon only had one stump to aim at to run out Ian Meckiff and he hit the stump which resulted in the first ever tied test.
5. In the 1970-71 Ashes series, which former Australian leg-spin bowler (Shane Warne's coach) was hit on the head by a John Snow bouncer?

Answer: Terry Jenner

The umpire standing at the bowler's end at the time warned John Snow about this delivery. When he was fielding out on the boundary, a drunk spectator tried to pull him into the fence but Snow pulled away. Spectators were throwing cans on the field in retaliation to Snow's bouncer which hit Terry Jenner on the head. Ray Illingworth led the English team off the ground and into the dressing room and stayed there until they were threatened about forfeiting by the umpires.
6. Who took over the captaincy for Australia when Bill Lawry got sacked as captain during the 1970-71 Ashes series?

Answer: Ian Chappell

At one stage, Ian Chappell's first match as Australian captain could have been a win by England forfeiting but unfortunately, England went on to win even though John Snow was unable to bowl in Australia's second innings because he injured his hand while fielding on the fence at fine-leg.
7. In the 1982 test series between Australia and Pakistan, in Pakistan, why did Kim Hughes lead his team from the field twice in the same day?

Answer: Because of a Pakistan crowd riot because of Mohsin Khan being dismissed by handling the ball

Certainly not the right way to react because of the team you support has a batsman dismissed in such an unusual way. Pakistan won the series 3-0.
8. During the 1970s, who were the spearheads of the Australian pace attack?

Answer: Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson

A superb bowling combination which meant Australia won lots of test matches during this decade.
9. In the Centenary Test (March 1977), in England's first innings, Australia bowled them out for 95. Which Australian bowler was the best of the lot (for the Australian bowlers) taking 6 wickets for 26 runs?

Answer: Dennis Lillee

Lillee took 11 wickets for the match as Australia won this test match by 45 runs.
10. The 1992-93 test series between the West Indies and Australia had created history because one of these teams won by the smallest ever margin in runs. Who won this match, what was the margin and who was the last batsman dismissed? (In order)

Answer: West Indies, 1 run, Craig McDermott of Australia

Australia's last wicket in their second innings fell at the score of 184.
