"The Great White Shark" was born in Mt Isa, northern Queensland. He turned professional in 1976 winning his first official title. Between 1978 and 1996 he won over 28 official titles including the Australian Open and the Australian Masters and in 1999 he became the first player on the PGA Tour to exceed $12m in prize money.

Susie Maroney, who resides in the Sutherland Shire (south of Sydney), began her swimming career at the age of three, to help her asthma. At 15, she was the youngest Australian to swim the English Channel.

It was the 65th series of The Ashes and Allan Border captained the Australians for the 19th time in the First Test held in Brisbane. Born in Cremorne (Sydney), he debuted at test match level in 1978, was named Cricketer of the Year in 1982 and played his last test in 1994.

He scored 11,174 runs throughout his career, averaging 50+ per match, scoring more test fifties than any other player who preceeded him.

Alan Jones made his Formula One debut in 1975 in Spain. In 1982, at the age of 35, he retired, then made a comeback in 1983, then retired again in 1986! He raced touring cars in Australia in the 1980s and 1990s with his best result being runner up in the 1993 Australian Touring Car Championship.

Born in Brisbane, Kieren took to swimming to rehabilitate after accidentally falling through a plate glass window! In 1992 he was awarded the Young Australian of the Year Award and the Order of Australia Medal. In 1994 Kieren held every major title and record for the 1500m and in 1996, Kieren became only the second person in 100 years to win back-to-back Olympic titles over 1500m.

Born in Ayr, Queensland, Karrie started playing at the age of eight. She turned professional in 1994 and won the Women's British Open in 1995. In 1996 she was named Female Golfer of the Year. She won the British Open again in 1997 and was named as one of the LPGA's 50 top players in 2000.

The "Woodies", Mark who was born in Adelaide and Todd, who was born in Sydney, are the most successful male doubles combination Australia has ever seen! Winning five successive Wimbledon mens doubles titles is a feat only emulated once before in tennis history! They also won back-to-back US Open Doubles titles in 1995 and 1996 along with two
Australian Open titles in 1992 and 1997 and Olympic gold at Atlanta in 1996.

The "Wollongong Whiz" got his first motorbike out of a junkyard! He won his first World 500cc Championship in 1987, the first Australian to do so, and was named Australian Male Athlete of the Year. In 1991 he was inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame, then, in 2001 he was inducted into the MotoGP Hall of Fame.

Born in Brisbane, Susie is one of Australia's most successful swimmers. She has eight Olympic medals, was Australian Swimmer of the Year in both 1995 and 1996, Female Olympian of the Year in 1996, received the Order of Australia Medal in 1997, was Australian Female Athlete of the Year in 1998, and in 2000 broke the 200m butterfly world record which had stood for 19 years.
