Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team did Australia play against in the first one-day international cricket match, back in 1971?

Answer: England

The first ODI match was watched by 46,000 spectators in Melbourne in 1971. Australia won by five wickets.
2. Who, in 2003, became the first Australian to take seven wickets in an ODI match?

Answer: Glenn McGrath

McGrath took seven wickets against Namibia on February 27th. This match was part of the 2003 World Cup in South Africa. Just four days later, Andy Bichel also took seven wickets against England.
3. Who became the first Australian to score 5000 runs in ODIs?

Answer: Allan Border

Border achieved this feat against Pakistan in 1990. He went on to finish his career in 1994 with 6524 runs.
4. Who was the first Australian to take 200 ODI wickets?

Answer: Craig McDermott

McDermott got his 200th wicket against Sri Lanka in 1996, thus becoming the first Aussie player to do so.
5. Who, in 1986, became the first player to take a hat trick in ODI internationals?

Answer: Bruce Reid

Reid`s hat trick against New Zealand was well timed - just a few days earlier, New Zealand had handed Australia one of their all-time worst cricketing defeats - the home side had been bundled out for just 70, with Reid being the last man out.
6. Who was the first Australian wicket keeper to achieve six dismissals in an innings?

Answer: Adam Gilchrist

Gilchrist is not only a brutally effective one day batsman, but a very good keeper. He achieved this feat in Cape Town in 2000.
7. Who, in 1993, became the first Australian to score 50 runs and take five wickets in the same match?

Answer: Mark Waugh

Mark Waugh did this in 1993 against the West Indies. He scored 57 runs and took 5-24.
8. Who, in 2000, became the first Australian to bat through a completed `all out` (10 for) ODI innings?

Answer: Damien Martyn

Amazingly, it took more than thirty years of international play for this feat to be achieved. This probably attests to the consistency of the Aussie batting line-up. In this case, Martyn`s team mates fell one after the other whilst he steadied the ship, finishing on 116 not out. New Zealand won the match, however.
9. Who was the first Australian player to achieve the milestone of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in ODIs?

Answer: Simon O`Donnell

Simon O`Donnell was one of Australia`s first specialist ODI players. He achieved little of note in his six tests but proved to be one the mainstays of the one-day side in the latter half of the 1980s. He reached the milestone of 1000 runs and 100 wickets against England in 1990. Dean Jones scored 145 runs in the same match, making it a memorable game.
10. Who was the first Australian to appear in 300 ODI matches?

Answer: Steve Waugh

Steve Waugh played his 300th ODI match for Australia against the West Indies in 2001. Arguably one of the greatest captains in the history of the sport, Waugh finished his ODI career with 7569 runs and 195 wickets.
