Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is missing from the 1966 set that is included in most other sets in the decade?

Answer: World Series cards

For some reason, the 1966 set did not inlcude World Series cards that summarized the 1965 series between the Dodgers and Twins.
2. Team cards were a prominent feature in the 1960s card sets. From 1965 to 1969, which team did not have a team card included in the sets?

Answer: Astros

For reasons unknown, the Astros did not have a team card these years. From 1965 to 1967, they were the only one of the 20 teams without a team card. The only year they had a team card was 1963 when they were the Colt .45s There were other strange things about the Astros' cards as well. With their name change in 1965, some 1965 cards have the team name as Houston while others say Houston Astros.

In 1969, every other team has the team name but all the Astros' cards say Houston instead of Astros.
3. For two years, team cards also stated where the team finished in the standings the prior season in addition to the team name. In which years' sets was this included?

Answer: 1965 & 1966

The rumor that protests from Mets and Athletics fans (because both years their cards showed they finished in 10th place), led to the end of this practice has not been proven.
4. In the 1966, '68, and '69 sets, the same color combination was repeated in the card design for each team, and each team in the American and National league shared a color combination for these 3 years. For example, the Dodgers and Yankees had yellow letters on a red background for either the team name, player name, or both. What two teams had white letters on a blue background?

Answer: Reds and Twins

The colors were as follows: Yellow letters on red background - Dodgers and Yankees. Yellow letters on green background - Senators and Giants. White letters on violet background - Pirates and Red Sox. White letters on blue background - Reds and Twins. White letters on a lavendar background - Braves and Angels. Red letters on a gray background - Phillies and Indians. Red letters on a yellow background - Cardinals and Tigers. White letters on an orange background - Cubs and White Sox. Black letters on a lime green background - Astros and Orioles. Yellow letters on a purple background - Mets and Athletics. With the 1969 expansion, the Padres and Pilots had yellow letters on a brown background, and the Expos and Royals had black letters on a pink background.
5. Which set had the team name and logo in a flag or pennant shaped field in one of the lower corners?

Answer: 1965

The 1965 set had this feature.
6. Combination cards (cards featuring two or more players) were a popular feature in some sets in the 1960s. In the 1966 set, the Pirates had a card called "Buc Belters." What two players were pictured on this card?

Answer: Donn Clendenon & Willie Stargell

Stargell led the Pirates in home runs in 1965 & 66, but Clendenon was 3rd on the team in HRs those years (behind Jim Pagliaroni in 1965 and behind Roberto Clemente in 1966).
7. A Braves combination card in 1967 titled "Atlanta Aces" featured what two players?

Answer: Denis Menke & Tony Cloninger

A strange card in that the Braves had many stars on their team, like Aaron, Carty, Alou, and Torre. Yet Topps featured their "Aces" as Menke, who hit .251 in 1966 and Cloninger, who won 14 games but had an ERA of 4.12.
8. In the 1966 set, a Dodgers Rookie Stars card featured two pitchers who would each eventually become 20 game winners. Who?

Answer: Don Sutton & Bill Singer

Singer won 20 games for the Dodgers in 1969 and for the Angels in 1973, but arm injuries plagued him through much of his career. Sutton won 21 games in 1976 and went on to become the Dodgers all time leader in wins and strikeouts. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998.
9. One of the most valuable cards from the decade is the 1968 Mets Rookie Stars card featuring Nolan Ryan. Who else is pictured on that card with Ryan?

Answer: Jerry Koosman

Koosman went on to have a solid career, winning over 200 games and for many years he was the Mets #2 starter behind Tom Seaver.
10. Which set had the players photos on a "wood" background?

Answer: 1962

The cards were made to look like the players photo was glued onto a small wood board. The 1987 set had a similar design.
