Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What major league player hit the first regular season home run in a baseball game held outside the United States?

Answer: Mack Jones

Mack Jones was playing for the Montreal Expos during their inaugural 1969 season. The Expos hosted the 1968 National League champion St. Louis Cardinals in their first game, and beat them 8-7 at Jarry Park.
2. Most baseball fans know that Joe DiMaggio set a record for the longest hitting streak in the major leagues at 56 games. But who set a hit streak record in the minor leagues?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

Yes, the Yankee Clipper set a minor league record as well with a 61-game streak in 1933 with San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League. Robin Ventura put together a 58-game streak for Oklahoma State University, which was at the time the NCAA record. Dave Winfield never played in the minors, and Bob Uecker may not have gotten 61 hits in his entire professional career.
3. To say the 1904 Washington Senators were a bad team would be putting it mildly. Their 38-113 record sounds pathetic enough, especially when you consider one American League pitcher had more wins than that by himself. Who was that 40-game winner in the Major Leagues?

Answer: Jack Chesbro

Chesbro won 41 games in 1904 for the New York Highlanders, who became the Yankees a few years later. Unfortunately for the spitballer, most people remember his 12th loss more. On the final day of the regular season, needing a doubleheader sweep of the Boston Pilgrims (later Red Sox), Chesbro uncorked a wild pitch in the ninth inning to allow the winning run to score.
4. Probably the only player to have two seasons in the Major Leagues and never pick up a glove or a bat, this man was another Charlie Finley experiment. Who was this Major League first designated runner?

Answer: Herb Washington

Washington played for the Oakland A's in 1974 and 1975, and was only 31 of 48 on stolen base attempts, proving once again that speed alone doesn't guarantee success. The low point may have come in the 1974 World Series, when Washington was picked off first by L.A. Dodger pitcher Mike Marshall.
5. Greg Maddux of the Braves set a National League record for throwing an amazing 72 innings without giving up a walk. Which of the following set an American and Major League record for throwing 84 innings without a walk in 1962?

Answer: Bill Fischer

Fischer knew where home plate was. He walked just eight men in 127-2/3 innings in 1962. Of course, when you put the ball over the plate that often, bad things can happen. Fischer also gave up 150 hits, including 16 home runs.
6. When a manager needs a hit late in the game, he looks for a pinch-hitter. When he needed a home run, who was the best man to call on? Which of the following set a record for most pinch-hit home runs in a career?

Answer: Cliff Johnson

Cliff Johnson was not someone pitchers wanted to face late in a close game. The 15-year veteran hit 20 of his almost 200 career home runs coming off the bench.
7. What player set a career record for breaking up the most no-hitters with home runs?

Answer: Rickey Henderson

A bit of a trick question here. Henderson hit 81 career leadoff home runs (breaking up a no-hitter every time) making him the clear leader.
8. Most people would be happy to have the chance to drive in eight runs in a major league career, because it meant you made the big leagues. Which player drove in eight runs in one inning?

Answer: Fernando Tatis

In 1999, Fernando Tatis of the St. Louis Cardinals came to the plate twice in the third inning of a game against the L.A. Dodgers, and found the bases full each time. He cleared them with home runs each time, giving him eight RBIs in the inning. Both grand slams came off Chan Ho Park, making you wonder why he was still in the game for the second shot.
9. There are some numbers people look at as meaning you had a good season. A .300 batting average, 50 home runs, 100 RBIs, etc. Who was the first player to have a season with more than 20 doubles, triples and home runs?

Answer: Frank Schulte

In 1911, Wildfire Schulte had 30 doubles, 21 triples and 21 home runs for the Chicago Cubs. Since then, Jim Bottomley, Jeff Heath, Willie Mays and George Brett have all had 20-20-20 seasons, but all them had 20 triples on the button, leaving Schulte as the only player with more than 20 in each category.
10. In the World Series, a manager needs to keep his cool and make sure he remains in control of his players and his emotions. Sometimes, though, you have to blow off a little steam. Who was the first manager to be ejected from two World Series games?

Answer: Bobby Cox

Cox was thrown out of games in the 1992 and 1996 World Series while managing the Atlanta Braves. In both cases, the Braves not only lost the game he was tossed out of, but the series also.
