Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the object you use to hit the ball?

Answer: Racquet

Racquets come in many different colours and sizes depending on your skill level. For example, a 26 inch racquet is for beginners. A bat is often used for sports like cricket. Clubs are used for sports like golf. The hand is often used for sports like European handball.
2. What is the name of the shot in which the ball is spinning backwards?

Answer: Slice

The slice shot spins backwards causing it to skid through on your opponent when it hits the ground. It can also cause the ball to bounce up rather than skid on different surfaces, like grass. This shot is one that can be a handy shot to have if you are trying to change the game up. Forehand, this is the shot on the prefered side of the player. Backhand, this is the shot on the non-prefered side of the player. Serve, this is an above head shot that starts the point.
3. What is the first thing done to start a point?

Answer: Serve

The serve is the thing that starts the point and is considered one of the key factors if you want to win a tennis match. The return is the first shot for the returner, but it does not start the point. A slice is just a type of shot but there can be a slice serve. At no stage during a point are you actually allowed to throw the ball.
4. Where does the serve have to land to be called a good serve in singles competition?

Answer: In the service box

The serve must land inside the service box for the ball to be called good. If it lands anywhere else in the court it is called a fault. If the ball lands past the service line, it is actually not in the service box and is therefore a fault. No matter what shot or form of tennis you are playing, if the ball lands out of the service box, it is out.

In the tram lines, the only time the ball is allowed to bounce here is after the serve in doubles.
5. The out lines change for doubles.

Answer: True

The out lines do change in doubles as you are allowed to hit the ball in the tram lines, and are not allowed to do in singles play. Although you still have to hit the serve into the service box, this does not change for any form of tennis.
6. If you win the first two points, then lose the next three points, what is the score?

Answer: 30-40

The score order goes 15, 30, 40, game. Your score is first only if you are serving, but if you were returning, the score would be 40-30. This is because the server's score is always put first. 15-40 would have won one point and lost three points. 30-30 would have won two points and lost two points. 15-30 would have won one point and lost two points.
7. There is no such thing as the Australian Open.

Answer: False

The Australian Open is one of four Grand Slams played throughout the year, and many well known players play in this event. It is played on the Rebound Ace surface. The other three Grand Slams are the US Open (Hard Court), Wimbledon (Grass), and the French Open (Clay). There are also many other tournaments throughout the year, but the Grand Slams are worth the most amount of money to win.
8. What is the name of the two very outside lines on the sides?

Answer: Tram lines

Tram lines got their name because they resemble tram tracks. The tram lines are only used during doubles, and never used during singles. The service line is the line in the middle of the court. It is horizontal to the back of the court. The base line is the line at the very back of the court.

It is horizontal to the back of the court. The centre line runs in the middle of the court and is vertical to the back of the court.
9. What is it called when you serve a ball and your opponent cannot get any part of the racquet to hit the ball?

Answer: Ace

Ace. If you hit the serve and your opponent cannot touch the ball with any part of his/her raquet it is called an ace. This is a key part of winning a match of tennis as if you can hit four aces in a row you have won a game and all you had to do was hit four good serves.

Incorrect Answers: Fault, this is if your serve had either gone wide, long or into the net --- Return, this is if your opponent gets the serve back --- Let, this is if your serve had hit the net and gone in.
10. What is it called when the serve hits the net and still goes in?

Answer: Let

If your serve hits/touches the net on its way in, it is called a let and you may have that serve again. If the ball hits/touches the net and lands outside the service line, it is called a fault and you may not have that serve again.
