Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1932 was the last World Series that Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth would combine their efforts for the Yankees' flag. Which two other big guns hit 15 home runs each in the season for the pinstripes?

Answer: Bill Dickey and Tony Lazzeri

Dickey was the catcher and Lazzeri was their second baseman. 10 times in 14 seasons, Lazzeri hit the big one in double-figures, one season more than Dickey. In 1932, the Babe hit 41 while Gehrig hit 34 home runs. They defeated the Cubs four games to none in the World Series.

The Cochrane combination were Philadelphia Athletics, Jolley and Johnson were Red Sox, and other two were Tigers.
2. The St. Louis Cardinals finished second in the NL in 1963 behind the Dodgers. Bill White hit 27 to lead the Cardinals. Who was the team's runner-up and big gun third baseman?

Answer: Ken Boyer

Boyer hit 24 for St. Louis. He spent 11 of his 15 seasons with the Cardinals, and hit 255 big ones for the team. Ironically, Ken hit 24 in each season from 1961-1964.
3. With the huge Yankee payroll in 2008, they had seven big guns who hit home runs in double-figures in the season. Alex Rodriguez led the team with 35. Who was the team's runner-up?

Answer: Jason Giambi

The others were all Yankees once, but were all retired for at least five years. Giambi hit 32 for the pinstripes in the season. A-Rod just came off hitting 54 in 2007. Other Yankees in double-figures in the season were Bobby Abreu, Johnny Damon, Robinson Cano, Xavier Nady, and Derek Jeter.
4. The St. Louis Browns were a dismal team in their days from 1902-1953. They won only one AL Championship in their history. Who hit the most career home runs for the Browns?

Answer: Ken Williams

The others had the honor of never playing for the St. Louis Browns. Williams played for the Browns from 1918-1927. He hit 185 home runs for the team. The only legitimate name that the Browns produced was George Sisler, who batted over .300 ten times, over .400 twice, and set a record for 257 hits in a season in 1920.

It would take over 80 seasons for the Hall of Famer's record to be broken by Ichiro Suzuki in 2004.
5. The 2008 Chicago Cubs won yet another division crown, but lost in the NLDS to the Dodgers. They had seven sluggers hit home runs in double-figures, with five of those that hit 20+. Who led the team in home runs in the season?

Answer: Alfonso Soriano

The others weren't Cubs in 2008. Soriano came to the Cubs for the 2007 season from the Nationals. He showed his appreciation by hitting 33 in 2007 to lead the team, then another 29 in 2008 to lead the team again.
6. The new New York Mets appeared for the first time in the National League in 1962. They did not fare well. Although they had five players hit home runs in double-figures, who led the team by hitting 18 more than the runner-up?

Answer: Frank Thomas

The others never played for the Mets. This was not the "Big Hurt" Frank Thomas who made his name with the White Sox in the 1990s, and the two were not related. This Thomas spent half of his 16 seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates. With the new Mets in 1962, Frank led the team with 34.

Other Mets in the season to hit in double-figures were Marv Throneberry, Jim Hickman, Felix Mantilla, and Charlie Neal. They would go on to lose more than 100 games in the season, and would do this in another three consecutive seasons.
7. The 1998 St. Louis Cardinals had a historical big gun in the season. He would set a record for his big gun bat, but his Cardinals would still finish only third in the NL East. Who was this?

Answer: Mark McGwire

The others didn't play Major League baseball in 1998. 1998 was the first full season with McGwire as a Cardinal and found him hitting 70 home runs. He was traded midseason 1997 from the Athletics. In 1997, Mark was the first player to lead the Major Leagues in home runs, but not take home a crown.

Although he hit 34 for Oakland and 24 for the Cardinals, his 58 combined would not do it in either league. Larry Walker of the Rockies took the home run crown by hitting 49, and Ken Griffey Jr. of the Mariners hit 56.
8. The Big Red Machine of Cincinnati won two consecutive World Series in 1975 and 1976. Which was the only big gun to hit more than 20 home runs in each of those two seasons for the Reds?

Answer: George Foster

Foster was the only one to bang out more than 20 each in both seasons. His 23 was runner-up to Bench's 28 in 1975, while he led the Reds the following season with his 29.
9. The 1994 San Francisco Giants had only two big guns with a bat that hit more than 10 home runs in the season, but both really counted. One was Barry Bonds who hit 37 home runs for the team. Which Giant teammate over-shadowed Bonds and led the Major Leagues in home runs in 1994?

Answer: Matt Williams

Williams was the Giants' third baseman in 1994, and popped for 43 home runs to lead the Majors. Matt played 10 of his 17 seasons with the Giants. He hit a career 247 home runs in a Giants uniform.
10. 1961 was the season of Roger Maris and the New York Yankees. Maris broke Babe Ruth's 1927 season record by hitting 61 home runs. Teammate Mickey Mantle was always in the hunt, but injuries kept him at 54 home runs for the season. Which Yankee big gun was the only pinstripe player to hit more than one home run in the 1961 World Series?

Answer: Johnny Blanchard

The others all played for the Yankees, but were all retired before 1961. Blanchard who had hit 21 home runs in the season, saved his highlight reels for game three and game five against the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series. The Yankees won the series, four games to one. Yankee pitcher Whitey Ford was the series MVP.
