Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following Blue Jays never led the league in home runs?

Answer: George Bell

Barfield hit 40 home runs in 1986 and McGriff hit 36 in 1989 to lead the American League. Although Bell won the MVP award in 1987, his 47 home runs were second to Oakland first baseman (and rookie) Mark McGwire. Canseco led the AL in homers in 1988 and 1991 while with Oakland.
2. The Blue Jays acquired Tom Henke as compensation for the free agent signing of which player?

Answer: Cliff Johnson

Prior to the 1985 season, Johnson signed with the Texas Rangers. The Jays then re-acquired Johnson in a mid-season trade later that year during the "Drive of 85".
3. Who started at first base for the Jays on opening day 1993?

Answer: Domingo Martinez

The Jays began the '93 season against the Randy Johnson and the Mariners. Jays manager Cito Gaston regularly sat Olerud against tougher left-handed starters.
4. The Blue Jays drafted Shawn Green in 1991 with a compensatory pick granted as the result of losing which player to free agency?

Answer: Bud Black

Hoping to help their quest to make the playoffs, the Jays traded Mauro Gozzo and Steve Cummings to Cleveland for Black with only 2 weeks to go in the season. Although they missed the playoffs, the trade certainly worked out well for the Jays.
5. On September 14, 1987, the Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 18-3, and set a Major League record by hitting 10 home runs. Which of these players did not hit a home run in that game?

Answer: Jesse Barfield

Barfield went 4 for 5 but did not hit one out. It was Ducey's first career home run.
6. On August 24, 1983, during a game in Baltimore, three Blue Jays were picked off in the same inning (top of the 10th)! Which of the following players was not one of the three picked off?

Answer: Damaso Garcia

After pinch-hitting for their back-up catcher in the bottom of the ninth (starter Rick Dempsey had already been pulled from the game), the Orioles moved infielder Len Sakata behind the plate. The over-anxious Jays' baserunners all got burned by O's lefty Tippy Martinez.
7. In 1987, the Tigers overtook the Jays by sweeping the final three games of the season, in Detroit. Who was the Jays' last out in the final game?

Answer: Garth Iorg

Iorg, an original Blue Jay, never played again. Whitt and Fernandez were both hurt and didn't play during the final games of the season. Myers, a raw rookie, was forced into action to replace the ailing Whitt.
8. Which of these one-time Blue Jays pitchers never won a Cy Young award?

Answer: Phil Niekro

Niekro, despite more than 300 career wins, never won the Cy Young award. He pitched briefly for the Jays in 1987, going 0-2 with an ERA of 8.25. Vukovitch was an original Blue Jay, and subsequently won the Cy Young award with Milwaukee in 1982. Flanagan won the award while with the Orioles in 1979 before playing parts of 4 seasons with the Jays towards the end of his career. Cone was a late season addition during the Jays championship 1993 season.

The next year, he signed as a free agent with Kansas City and won the Cy Young Award.

The Jays reaquired Cone in a trade prior to the 1995 season before trading him to the Yankees later that year.
9. Who was the first former MVP to play for the Blue Jays?

Answer: Jeff Burroughs

Burroughs won the MVP in 1974 with Texas before joining Toronto for the 1985 season. Clemens won the award in 1987 with Boston and later won Cy Young awards in his only two seasons as a Jay ('97 and '98). Canseco was the 1988 AL MVP with Oakland, 10 years before his only season in Toronto. Kent broke in with Toronto in 1992, and later won the award with the Giants in 2000. Additionally, Dave Parker who was briefly a Blue Jay at the end of the 1990 season, won the award in 1978 with Pittsburgh.
10. Devon White won 5 consecutive Gold Gloves patrolling centerfield for the Jays. Which of the following Jays' outfielders did not win a Gold Glove?

Answer: Lloyd Moseby

Aside from White, Green, Barfield and Wells, other Jays to win a Gold Glove included Orlando Hudson, Roberto Alomar, Kelly Gruber and Tony Fernandez.
