Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Blue Jays play in Toronto, which is the capital of __________ .

Answer: Ontario

The Toronto Blue Jays play in the capital of Ontario. Their stadium is near the lakeshore of one of the Great Lakes of the same name as the province - Lake Ontario. From 1969 to 2004, there was a major league team in Montreal. The Montreal Expos played in the National League, but the team was moved to Washington, D.C. for the 2005 season.

At that point, the Blue Jays became the only MLB team in Canada. So, despite having a home field in Toronto, the team is known as "Canada's Team" amongst its fans.
2. What is the name of the stadium where the Blue Jays first played upon their admission in 1977, until they moved in 1989?

Answer: Exhibition Stadium

Exhibition Stadium is on the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). The photo attached to this clue shows the entrance to the CNE grounds. The stadium was built for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League in 1959, and was retrofitted for the Blue Jays in the mid-1970s.

There was no roof on the stadium, so when the Blue Jays played their first home game there in April, 1977 they experienced a snow storm with significant accumulation. The grounds crew went into action and got the field in shape for a game, but it was a weather event that is still laughed about by Blue Jays fans.
3. In what years did the Toronto Blue Jays win their first two World Series?

Answer: 1992 & 1993

World Series Championships were played in a "best of seven" format. In 1992, Toronto faced the Atlanta Braves in the World Series. Toronto won the series four games to two. This World Series was notable for a few reasons. It was the first time that World Series games were held outside the USA.

It was also the first time that the World Series was won by a team from outside the USA. In 1993, the Blue Jays beat the Philadelphia Phillies four games to two to win the World Series again.
4. Who was the manager of the Blue Jays when they won their first two World Series championships?

Answer: Cito Gaston

Cito Gaston has been the manager for the Blue Jays a few times. He managed the team from 1989 through 1997. He was hired as manager once again from 2008 through 2010. During his years with the Blue Jays, he led the team to two World Series Championships, four American League East division titles, and two American League pennants.

The other options in this question were also Blue Jays managers at other times, but none of them managed the team to a World Series win.
5. Who was the starting pitcher of the Blue Jays' first game?

Answer: Bill Singer

Singer started the first spring training game that the Blue Jays ever had in March, 1977. The Blue Jays won that game against the New York Mets 3-1. He also pitched in the opening game of the regular season in April, 1977. The Blue Jays played the Chicago White Sox that day.

He gave up eleven hits before being removed from the game in the fourth inning. The Blue Jays came back to get a win, so Singer received a no-decision on his record because he had pitched fewer than five innings.
6. Blue Jays moved their home games in 1989 to what subsequently (in 2005) renamed the Rogers Centre. What was the name of that stadium from the time that it opened in 1989 until it was renamed in 2005?

Answer: Skydome

The Skydome was built at the base of the CN Tower in the south end of Toronto. It was considered a huge move up from their first stadium. At the time, it was an innovative stadium because it had a roof that moved back when the weather was good, but could be closed in bad weather.

It was the first stadium in Major League Baseball with a fully retractable roof. The Skydome opened on June 3, 1989. It changed to the Rogers Centre when the team was purchased by Rogers Communications in 2005.
7. Has there ever been a no hitter pitched by a Blue Jays player?

Answer: Yes

Dave Stieb was a star pitcher with the Blue Jays from 1979 to 1992 and again in 1998. He pitched the first Blue Jays no-hitter in history on September 2, 1990. The Blue Jays won that game 3-0 against the Cleveland Indians.
8. Besides "Take Me Out to the Ballgame", what other song is sung by the fans during the seventh-inning stretch at Blue Jays home games?

Answer: OK, Blue Jays

"OK, Blue Jays" is a song that was written by Jack Lenz and Tony Kosinec in 1983. It was recorded by Keith Hampshire and his backup band The Bat Boys. The song makes reference to a number of team-specific rivalries. The chorus of the song is " OK, Blue Jays! Let's play ball!".

The original song was over two minutes long, but was cut down to fifty-eight seconds for use during the Seventh Inning Stretch during home games.
9. The _________ Bisons are the Triple A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.

Answer: Buffalo

The Triple A team of the Blue Jays typically play their home games at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, NY. That stadium has the highest-capacity Triple-A ballpark in the USA. That made it ideal for the Blue Jays to play their home games there in 2020 and 2021 when international travel between Canada and the USA was impossible due to the COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions.

In 2021, the Bisons temporarily moved to Arm & Hammer park in Trenton, NJ to allow the Blue Jays the use of their home park.
10. In 1991, what MLB team record did the Blue Jays set?

Answer: First to attract over four million fans in a season

The Blue Jays are a very popular team. In 1977, they set a record for Major League expansion team attendance. After only 50 games, their attendance was 1,219,551. They set an attendance record amongst Major League teams in 1990, with 3,885,284 fans. Then, in 1991, they became the first Major League team to attract over four million fans in a single season.

The total attendance that year was 4,001,526. Other teams have since broken these records, but they were initially made in Toronto because the Blue Jays are so popular.
