Luis Tiant joined the Red Sox in 1971 and remained with the team until the 1978 season. As a free agent he joined the New York Yankees. Even though he played for Boston's biggest rival he was still considered a Red Sox legend.

Answer: Tony Conigliaro

Fans avoided wearing light colors for Tony Conigliaro because in the '67 season with the Red Sox, he was belted in the eye by a pitch. He missed the remainder of the season and the following year. He returned to the game in 1969 and won the Comeback Player of the Year award.

His vision got worse and forced him to retire. At 37, he suffered a heart attack and he was left in poor physical condition. He died in 1990 at 45.
