Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Toronto Blue Jay franchise began it all as an American League expansion team in 1977. Who was the team's first manager that had to put it all together?

Answer: Roy Hartsfield

As with any expansion team, the Blue Jays did not get off to even an average start under Hartsfield. In their first three seasons they lost over 100 games each time. Mattick replaced Hartsfield in 1980, then Cox replaced Mattick for the 1982 season.

In Cox's second season he had the Blue Jays as a .500 team with 89 wins, then another 89 in 1984. Bobby took the team to 99 wins in 1985 along with their first playoff appearance, but lost the ALCS to the Royals.
2. The Blue Jays retired their first-ever uniform number in honor of which player, who wore the number 12?

Answer: Roberto Alomar

Roberto was a second baseman who played for three seasons with the Padres before becoming a Blue Jay in 1991. He played with Toronto for only five seasons but was in the top six of the MVP voting in three of those seasons. Alomar retired with the White Sox in 2004 after 17 career seasons, gathering 10 Gold Glove Awards.
3. Who was the first Blue Jays pitcher to win 20 games in a season?

Answer: Jack Morris

They were all 20-game winners for the Blue Jays, but it was Morris who went 21-6 in 1992 for Toronto, good enough for a sixth place spot in the Cy Young voting. It was Morris' third and final 20-win season in his career in 1992 (he went 20-13 in 1983 and 21-8 in 1986 with Detroit).

Hentgen also shined from the mound in 1996 when he went 20-10 and won the American League Cy Young Award. It was Pat's only 20-win season in all of his 14 seasons in Major League Baseball. Roger Clemens won 21 for Toronto in 1997 and another 20 in 1998, then David Wells won 20 in 2000.
4. In which season did Blue Jay fans find their team in their first World Series?

Answer: 1992

The Blue Jays had made the playoffs three times prior to the 1992 season (1985, 1989 and 1991), but couldn't advance to the big top. In 1992, they won the AL East with a record of 96-66 which matched the AL West winners Oakland Athletics season record.

They defeated the Athletics in the ALCS and it was on to the World Series against the powerful Atlanta Braves. The Blue Jays took top honors and defeated the Braves four games to two. They would also win the 1993 World Series against the Philadelphia Phillies by the same game count.
5. The Blue Jays have always seemed to have the intelligence to trade for or draft some big sluggers. Who was their first player to hit 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: Jose Bautista

They were all Blue Jays, and it was Jose Bautista who hit an amazing 54 home runs in the 2010 season which was good enough for fourth place in the MVP voting in the American League. He hit 43 in 2011 and finished third in the MVP voting. Before all that he was traded from the Pirates to the Blue Jays in August 2008 to the delight of Toronto fans.
6. Although the Blue Jays lost over 100 games in their inaugural season of 1977, Canadian fans were more than supportive by drawing over one million fans in their ballpark. This ranked in which position for attendance amongst all 14 American League teams in the season?

Answer: 4th

The Blue Jay fans were all over their new home team by drawing 1,701,052 in their first season which was the fourth most in the American League in 1977. The already established New York Yankees drew 2,103,092 fans to take the top spot in the league for the season.
7. Who was the first Blue Jay pitcher to strikeout over 200 batters in a season?

Answer: Roger Clemens

All these Blue Jays listed struck out more than 200 in a season for Toronto, but it was the great Roger Clemens who beat them all to the mound by striking out a team record 292 in 1997. He followed that up with striking out 271 in 1998. Both would win Roger the American League Cy Young Award.
8. The MVP Award and Cy Young Award are tremendous and lifelong achievements in baseball. Who was the first Blue Jay to win either award?

Answer: George Bell

Bell took the American League MVP in 1987 by hitting .308, banging out 47 home runs, and knocking in 134 runs. The left fielder won the MVP Award over Alan Trammell of the Tigers and Kirby Puckett of the Twins. George played for the Blue Jays from 1981-1990.

He then played one season with the Cubs, two with the White Sox, then retired in 1993. Hentgen won the AL Cy Young Award in 1996, then Clemens in 1997 and 1998. Halladay won the Cy Young in 2003.
9. Toronto fans almost did not get the Blue Jays as an expansion team in 1977. Which team did they almost get instead in 1976?

Answer: Toronto Giants

The San Francisco Giants' owner Horace Stoneman agreed to sell the Giants to a bevy of new shareholders, one of which was the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce who wanted to move the franchise to Toronto. They were to begin play in the newly renovated Exhibition Stadium in 1976.

Other teams and corporations with ties to Major League Baseball tried to block the sale and took it to the U.S. courts. After the sale was denied by the courts and Major League Baseball, Bob Lurie purchased the team and kept the Giants in San Francisco. Did this clear the way for the new Blue Jays team? Not yet as U.S. President Gerald Ford tried to lobby that this new franchise should be located in Washington D.C., but that fell apart among his interesting investors. All in all, Toronto received their new baseball franchise with open arms in 1977.
10. Who was the first player that ever wore a Blue Jays uniform at some point in their career and was inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Answer: Phil Niekro

Niekro was a 24-season pitcher from 1964-1987. He pitched for the Blue Jays in only one season in 1987 season when he went 0-2. His career record was 318-274 and was inducted into the hall in 1997.
