The Blue Jays started their 25th season in April 2001, so it seemed appropriate to ask a few questions about their very first season (one question falls outside the first season).

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the Blue Jays starting pitcher in their first game ever?

Answer: Bill Singer

Veteran right-hander Singer had been acquired from Minnesota in the Expansion Draft in November 1976.
2. Who was the winning pitcher in that 1977 Opening Day game?

Answer: Jerry Johnson

Jerry Johnson got the win for the Blue Jays in relief of Bill Singer on that first Opening Day, April 7, 1977. Ken Brett started and took the loss for the Chicago White Sox. Vuckovich got the save for the Jays.
3. Who was the first manager of the Blue Jays, who wore number 7?

Answer: Roy Hartsfield

Hartsfield was a successful minor league manager for fifteen years before getting the top job with the Blue Jays.
4. The first Toronto Blue Jay to hit a Grand Slam home run was _________ ?

Answer: Hector Torres

Shortstop Torres was an unlikely candidate to hit the first Grand Slam at the Ex, but he did the trick, off Ron Guidry of the Yankees on June 27, 1977.
5. A Toronto rookie hit a home run in his first major league at bat on April 7, 1977. Who was it?

Answer: Alvis Woods

Ault, Gary Woods and Bowling were all in the starting line up that day and all still qualified as rookies though they had made their major league debuts earlier. It was Al Woods who had a pinch-hit home run off Chicago reliever Francisco Barrios in his first ML at bat.
6. Tom Cheek was still the voice of the Blue Jays on the radio (and the internet)during their 25th season, but who was his broadcasting partner in those early days?

Answer: Early Wynn

Hall of Fame pitcher Early Wynn provided the colour for the first few seasons. Jerry came on the scene later, and Don Chevrier was on the Jays TV broadcasts.
7. What was the price of a 'field level chair' (the most expensive seats) in 1979?

Answer: $7

Information is from 1979 Media Guide, the earliest one I still own. Of course we are talking Canadian dollars. General Admission (the left field Grandstand) was only two bucks!
8. What was the weather like for that first Opening Day in April 1977?

Answer: snow and very cold

Yes, there was a snowstorm and freezing temperatures but the attendance was over 44,000. I listened to Tom and Early from a nice warm office about 100 miles away! The dome was not built until many years after this.
9. Where did the Blue Jays play their home games in their early years?

Answer: Exhibition Stadium

The 'Ex' was never really meant to be a baseball park, being more suited to Argos football or the CNE Grandstand show, but I had some great times there watching the Jays!
10. What was the other expansion team of 1977, besides the Blue Jays?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

First they lost Griffey and then A-Rod, how did the Mariners do in 2001? As it happened, the Mariners fared quite well with players like Bret Boone and Ichiro Suzuki in the line-up.
