Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the team captain for the 2005-06 season?

Answer: Rod Brind'Amour

With the retirement of Ron Francis, Rod Brind'Amour had some big shoes to fill in bringing the Hurricanes back to the playoffs. He proved to be competent enough for the job, as he finished the regular season with his best year since 1998-99, with a total of 70 points. Because of his contributions to the team, he won the Frank J. Selke award for the forward who best excels at the defensive aspects of the game.
2. Eric Staal had a ground-breaking year surpassing his rookie scoring in unbelievable fashion. How many more points had Staal earned in the 2005-06 season, as opposed to his rookie year in 2003-04?

Answer: 69

There was a vast change between Staal's rookie season and his 2005-06 season. In his rookie year, he got a total of 31 points, and in the 2005-06 season, he finished with a grand total of 100 points. Apparently, the lockout in 2004-05, improved his game.
3. The Carolina Hurricanes had two goalies to play in the regular season. One of them was Martin Gerber, and the other was Cam Ward. Which goalie played the most?

Answer: Martin Gerber

Martin Gerber played 60 games in the regular season, posting a 38-14 and 6 record, with 3 shutouts, 2 assists, a 2.78 goals against average, and a 0.906 save percentage. Cam Ward played a total of 28 games, posting a 14-8 and 2 record, with zero shutouts, 2 assists, a 3.68 goals against average, and a 0.882 save percentage. Cam Ward's performance drastically improved in his postseason outing.
4. The 2005-06 season marked a record-breaking year for the Carolina Hurricanes franchise. What was their record for the season?

Answer: 52-22-8

Carolina finished the regular season with a grand total of 112 points. That total was 21 more points than its previous record, set in 2001-02 under the grand goaltending of the legendary Arturs Irbe. Martin Gerber, Carolina's goalie in the 2005-06 season beat Irbe's franchise record for wins in a season with a total of 38.
5. Two very big trades occurred for the franchise in the 2005-06 season. Which two players were brought in to play?

Answer: Doug Weight and Mark Recchi

Doug Weight was acquired from the St. Louis Blues by the Carolina Hurricanes on January 30, 2006, for Jesse Boulerice, Mike Zigomanis, and Magnus Kahnberg, as well as a first-round pick in 2006, a fourth-round pick in 2006 and a fourth-round pick in 2007. In 23 regular season games with the Hurricanes, he acquired 13 points, and in 23 games of the playoffs, he got 16 points.
6. Who did the Carolina Hurricanes face in the first round of the playoffs?

Answer: Montreal Canadiens

The first round series between Carolina and Montreal is arguably one of the most exciting in the 2005-06 playoffs. Game 1 was an absolute blowout as Montreal picked apart Martin Gerber in a 6-1 win. In game 2, Gerber was once again made a fool of in a 6-5 overtime loss.

After that, the young Cam Ward was given the start, and he led the Hurricanes to a 2-1 win in game 3, a 3-2 win in game 4, and a 2-1 win in games 5 and 6 to eliminate the Montreal Canadiens 4-2 in the best of seven series.
7. Who did the Carolina Hurricanes face in the second round of the playoffs?

Answer: New Jersey Devils

Arguably one of the Carolina Hurricanes easiest opponents in the 2005-06 playoffs was the New Jersey Devils. Game 1 embarrassed the great Martin Brodeur with a 6-0 Carolina win. Games 2 and 3, under the super-human goaltending of Cam Ward ended with 3-2 scores. Game 4 finally ended Cam Ward's eight game winning streak with a 5-1 defeat in New Jersey, but the Hurricanes bounced back in game 5, with a 4-1 win to eliminate the New Jersey Devils 4-1 in the best of seven series.
8. Who did the Carolina Hurricanes face in the third round of the playoffs?

Answer: Buffalo Sabres

The Buffalo Sabres faced the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference final, and put up quite a resilient fight that lasted 7 games. Buffalo took game 1 with a 3-2 win in Carolina. Game 2 was a 4-3 win for Carolina, and game 3 was a 4-3 win for Buffalo. For game 4, Martin Gerber was put back between the pipes and shutout the Buffalo Sabres 4-0. Martin Gerber started in game 5 but was pulled after the team fell into a 3-1 hole at the beginning of the second period.

A highly motivated Hurricanes team won that game 4-3. Game 6 ended with a 2-1 overtime loss for Carolina, but the Hurricanes ended the series in game 7 by a score of 4-2. That victory marked the second time in franchise history that they had made the Stanley Cup final, the first time being in the 2001-02 season, under the grand goaltending of Arturs Irbe and Kevin Weekes.
9. Who did the Carolina Hurricanes face in the final round of the playoffs?

Answer: Edmonton Oilers

The two most unlikely teams ended up in the 2005-2006 Stanley Cup final. Game 1 saw the injury of Dwayne Roloson and a 5-4 win for the Carolina Hurricanes. In game 2, Edmonton put Markannen in net and suffered a humiliating 5-0 loss. In game 3, the Edmonton Oilers prevented the series from getting out of reach, by taking a 2-1 win over Carolina. Game 4 was a 2-1 victory for the Hurricanes. Down 3-1 in the best of seven series, the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Hurricanes 4-3 in game 5, and then held off Carolina's offense in game 6 to win 4-0 and take the series to a seventh game. Carolina won game 7, 3-1.
10. Did the Carolina Hurricanes win the Stanley Cup in the 2005-06 season?

Answer: Yes

The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Edmonton Oilers in the seventh game of the Stanley Cup finals by a score of 3-1. Aaron Ward scored the first goal, then Frantisek Kaberle scored the second. Fernando Pisani scored to make the score 2-1, but Justin Williams got the empty net tally. The win earned Carolina its first ever Stanley Cup.
