1. Who was the first catcher to have 200 hits in a season?

Answer: Mike Piazza

After winning the Rookie of the Year Award in 1993, Mike was in his sixth and final season with the Dodgers when he had 201 hits and batted .362 in 1997. In 1998, the Dodgers traded him to the Marlins, but Mike spent only eight days in Florida before being traded to the Mets.
2. Who was the first catcher to win 10 Gold Glove Awards behind the plate?

Answer: Johnny Bench

The Gold Glove Awards began in 1957, and the others didn't win any. Bench won 10 consecutive from 1968-1977, all with the Reds.
3. 10 times in his career, Hall of Fame catcher Ernie Lombardi hit over .300. Who was the next catcher to .300 even five times?

Answer: Thurman Munson

Lombardi played from 1931-1947. He was the NL MVP in 1938, and was the first catcher to win two batting titles. He was inducted into the hall in 1986. Munson, the New York Yankee great, batted .300 five times in his 11 seasons. His life was tragically cut short in an aircraft crash in 1979.
4. Which catcher broke Bob Boone's record for most games caught of 2223, when he retired with 2226?

Answer: Carlton Fisk

Fisk played in 24 seasons from 1969-1993. Boone played in only 19 seasons. Fisk split his career between the Red Sox and White Sox. He won the Rookie of the Year award in 1972. His most famous moment was his game six 12th inning home run in the 1975 World Series against the Reds to keep the Red Sox alive. Boston would however lose game seven.
5. Who was the first catcher inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Answer: Buck Ewing

From 1880-1897, Buck played his entire career in the National League except for one season in the Players League. Most of his career was spent with the New York Giants and caught for such greats as Tim Keefe and Mickey Welch. He led the league in home runs and triples one time each. Ewing was inducted in 1939, the fourth round of Hall of Fame inductions. Giant, Cardinal, and Cub catcher Roger Bresnahan was the next inducted in 1945, along with another pre-1900 catcher, King Kelly.
6. Which of these catchers set a record for the best fielding percentage?

Answer: Bill Freehan

Freehan spent his entire 15 seasons with the Detroit Tigers from 1961-1976. Amongst his five Gold Glove Awards, Bill caught for some of baseball's greats. From Jim Bunning to Mickey Lolich to Denny McLain, Bill was a fixture behind the Detroit plate in 1581 games. He had a career fielding percentage of .993, which equated to only 72 errors.
7. Which of the following catchers was behind the plate in four no-hitters?

Answer: Ray Schalk

Ray caught 17 of his 18 seasons with the Chicago White Sox. His last no-hitter caught was Charlie Robertson's perfect game in 1922. Schalk was third in the MVP voting that season behind George Sisler and Eddie Rommel.

Answer: Pirates

In 1989, Pittsburgh utility player Benny Distefano caught a game. He caught only three in his career. Left-handed catchers and baseball have never mixed. The Major League record for most games caught by a left-handed catcher was set in 1902 by Jiggs Donahue. He caught in only 43 career games.
9. From 1951-1955, Yogi Berra of the Yankees was busy winning three season MVP Awards. In the same time frame, which National League catcher won three also?

Answer: Roy Campanella

Campanella was a Brooklyn Dodger from 1948-1957. His three MVPs came in 1951, 1953, and 1955. His career was cut short in an automobile accident. Yogi's MVPs came in 1951, 1954, and 1955.
10. Which of the following catchers appeared in an amazing 14 World Series?

Answer: Yogi Berra

In Yogi's 18 seasons with the Yankees, he appeared in 14 World Series from 1947-1963. He and his Yankees won 10. He had 12 World Series home runs to his credit. Berra was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1972.
