Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Coca-Cola 600, originally known as the World 600, was first run in what year?

Answer: 1960

The race's original name was used from 1960 until 1984, when Coca-Cola assumed title sponsorship. The race has been run at Lowe's Motor Speedway (previously Charlotte Motor Speedway) since its inception. It is the longest regularly-scheduled single race on an oval track in the United States.
2. What veteran driver won the very first running of the World 600?

Answer: Joe Lee Johnson

No relation to popular NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson or legendary NASCAR owner Junior Johnson, Joe Lee Johnson's win at Charlotte was one of two wins he recorded in seven years on the NASCAR circuit. Johnson died in May, 2005, at the age of 75.
3. Which driver was the first to win the World 600 twice?

Answer: Fred Lorenzen

A native of Illinois and regarded as one of NASCAR's best drivers, Fred Lorenzen won World 600 titles in 1963 and 1965. They were among the 26 wins he collected during 12 years at NASCAR's top level. Jim Paschal (1964, 1967), David Pearson (1974, 1976), and Richard Petty (1975, 1977) also won the race twice.
4. Which driver was the first to win three World 600 championships?

Answer: Bobby Allison

The three World 600 wins that Bobby Allison recorded (1971, 1981, 1984) are among 84 total victories that he earned over a quarter-century of top level NASCAR racing. Allison also holds the distinction of winning the final World 600 before Coca-Cola assumed title sponsorship.
5. In what year did Coca-Cola become the title sponsor of the World 600?

Answer: 1985

Since Coca-Cola became the race's title sponsor, the race has been briefly known under two other names besides Coca-Cola 600, the Coca-Cola World 600 (1985), and the Coca-Cola Racing Family 600 (2002). The race supplies a heart-pounding nightcap to the Indianapolis 500. Both races are run on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.
6. Between 1960 and 2007, the race was shortened several times due to rain. Which of the following drivers did not win a rain-shortened race during that time?

Answer: Rusty Wallace

Weather has played a role in determining the Coca-Cola 600 champion on more than one occasion. So too, did the Arab Oil Embargo of 1973, which forced organizers to run an abbreviated 540-mile race in 1974. That race was won by Hall of Fame driver David Pearson.
7. Which popular driver won the 1993 Coca-Cola 600, the first to be run as an evening race?

Answer: Dale Earnhardt

Dale Earnhardt's third Coca-Cola 600 win came under the lights, as the race was moved to later in the day. Although the move was spurred by fans who wanted to enjoy the racing action during the cooler portions of the day, it has also allowed it and the Indianapolis 500 to enjoy the spotlight without competition from one another.
8. Which driver picked up his first NASCAR Sprint Cup win when he won the 2007 Coca-Cola 600?

Answer: Casey Mears

Casey Mears came from a racing pedigree that includes four-time Indianapolis 500 winner Rick Mears and off-road driver Roger Mears. Prior to joining NASCAR's top level in 2003, he drove in the Champ Car, IRL, and NASCAR Busch series.
9. In 2006, Jimmie Johnson was vying for a unprecedented fourth straight Coca-Cola 600 win. Johnson, however, ended up losing the race to which driver?

Answer: Kasey Kahne

Jimmie Johnson was the first driver to win three straight Coca-Cola 600 races. And he did so driving the #48 car, sponsored by Lowe's. But the fourth win wasn't in the cards. Nonetheless, Johnson scored back-to-back NASCAR Nextel Cup titles in 2006 and 2007.
10. For a driver to complete the Coca-Cola 600, how many laps would he have to complete?

Answer: 400

Lowe's Motor Speedway, the home to the Coca-Cola 600, is a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) quad-oval track that can accomodate up to 217,000 spectators in its grandstands and infields.
