Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Joe Montana
Answer: Notre Dame
Montana stories are legendary at Notre Dame. He was the 82nd pick in the 1979 draft by the San Francisco 49ers. He started his NFL career during the birth of the new pass-oriented West Coast Offense. He won 4 Super Bowls and is considered one the greatest quarterbacks of all time. His NFL career is now considered legendary as well.
2. Roger Staubach
Answer: US Naval Academy
The Dallas Cowboys selected Staubach in the 10th round of the 1964 NFL draft. Due to his military commitment, he didsn't actually join the Cowboys until 1969. He even spent time in Vietnam during the war. Add to the fact that Staubach is also color-blind. Even with the late start to his career, Staubach won 2 Super Bowls in his 11-year career.
3. Lawrence Taylor
Answer: North Carolina
One of the most disruptive players to ever play the game. Taylor's size and speed at the linebacker position drove opposing offenses crazy. He lined up all over the field and earned his ticket to Canton and the Hall of Fame. He was the 2nd pick in the 1982 draft from North Carolina. He played his entire career with the NY Giants.
4. Anthony Munoz
Answer: USC
USC has produced so many great players, O.J., Lott, Polamalu, Seau, Keyshawn etc.. If you had to pick one Trojan that dominated his position at the NFL level, you might have to pick Munoz as that player. He was the 3rd pick in the 1980 NFL Draft. He lasted 13 seasons, all with the Cincinnati Bengals. and made the Pro Bowl 11 times, a record for offensive linemen.
He is consistently ranked in the Top 20 players of all time.
5. Jim Brown
Answer: Syracuse
What do you say about one of the best ever players? Syracuse produced a lot of great NFL players but none match the career and reputation of Jim Brown. He was the 6th pick in the 1957 draft by the Cleveland Browns. The Browns haven't won a championship (1964) since he left them to retire early in 1965.
6. Randy Moss
Answer: Marshall
Moss was a tremendous athlete. He scored 156 TDs as a wide receiver. He threw 2 TD passes as well. By today's standards, he committed a few 'minor' infractions that pushed him out of a collegiate career at Notre Dame and Florida State. At Marshall, he hooked up with another NFL-bound QB, Chad Pennington, and they propelled each other to the NFL.
The Minnesota Vikings made him the 21st pick in the 1998 draft.
7. Earl Campbell
Answer: Texas
Campbell was a punishing running back. You could never accuse him of running out of bounds. He'd sooner run you over than go around you. This Texas Longhorn alum led the NFL in rushing his 1st three seasons. He was the 1st pick in the 1978 draft by the Houston Oilers.
8. Tony Dorsett
Answer: Pittsburgh
The ex-Pitt Panther owns the NFL record for the longest rushing play, 99 yards. That'll keep him in the record books forever since it can never be bettered, only tied. He was a Super Bowl champion with Dallas who made him the 2nd pick of the 1977 draft.
9. Fred Biletnikoff
Answer: Florida State
When they name an award after you, you know you've made an impact on the game. To add to that, he played during the run-oriented '60s and '70s where quarterbacks passed less than 20 times a game. He played WR and DB as a Seminole. He made the Oakland Raiders one of the best teams throughout the 1970's.
In 1965, he was actually draft by Detroit in the NFL and Oakland (3rd round) in the AFL. He signed with Oakland and the leagues merged in 1970.
10. Deacon Jones
Answer: Mississippi Vocational College
Its been said that if stats were kept the same way as when Deacon Jones played, he would be the all-time sack leader. Coming from a small college, he was drafted in the 14th round (there are only 7 rounds in the NFL Draft these days). The college later changed its name to the more recognizable, Mississippi Valley State College.
