Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What former Colt head coach was also a former Colts player?

Answer: Don Shula

Shula played Defensive Back for the Colts from 1953 through 1956. He returned to be Colt head coach in 1963. Shula took the Colts to two NFL Championship Games. They played the Cleveland Browns in both games. In 1964 the Browns won 27-0. In 1968 The Colts won 34-0.

However two weeks later, those 1968 Colts would lose to the Jets in Super Bowl III. Shula coached the Colts in 1969, then moved on to Miami.
2. In 2002 Marvin Harrison shattered the NFL single season receiving record. The old record was 123 catches. How many passes did Marvin catch in 2002?

Answer: 143

Harrison averaged nearly 9 catches per game in 2002. It is exceptional for a receiver to catch 100 passes in one season, let alone 143.
3. Prior to 1967, the NFL and the AFL held separate drafts and competed head to head for college players. The first combined draft was held in 1967. The Colts got the very first pick of that historic draft via a trade with the Saints. What future All-Pro player did they select?

Answer: Bubba Smith

Bubba was a massive defensive end and was nearly unstoppable in his early years. In a preseason game in 1972, he got tangled in the yard marker chains on the sideline and injured his knee. He missed the whole season and was never the same player afterwards.

He later found fame as an actor. He played "Hightower" in the Police Academy movies. Mike Curtis, Ted Hendricks and John Mackey all played for the Colts in Super Bowls III and V. Hendricks and Mackey are in the Hall Of Fame, some believe Curtis should be there too.
4. From Johnny Unitas to Bert Jones to Peyton Manning the Colts have seen some great Quarterbacks. Between the greats there were some others who led the Colts. Which of these "Others" threw for the most yards during their Colt career?

Answer: Jack Trudeau

They all had their ups and downs, heres how they stack up:
Jack Trudeau threw for 9,647 yards and 41 TDs from 1986-93
Jeff George threw for 9,551 yards and 41 TDs from 1990-93
Jim Harbaugh threw for 8,705 yards and 49 TDs from 1994-97
Mike Pagel threw for 7,474 yards and 39 TDs from 1982-85
5. What Colt was first to return 4 punts for a touchdown during their Colt career?

Answer: Clarence Verdin

Verdin returned punts and kickoffs for the Colts from 1988-93. He also saw action as a wide receiver. He caught 80 passes for 7 TDs during his years with the Colts. His 16.2 yard per catch average shows he was a deep threat. His speed and elusiveness made him fun to watch and a threat to score every time he touched the ball.
6. What Colt was the first to return a fumble 95 yards for a touchdown?

Answer: Chukie Nwokorie

Nwokorie rumbled 95 yards at the New York Jets in 2001
Coryatt ran 78 yards with a fumble at Pittsburgh on 9/18/94
Bennett ran 75 yards with a fumble against The Oilers on 9/4/94
Emtman intercepted Dan Marino in Miami in 1992 and raced 90 yards to seal a Colt victory.
7. In 1975 the Colts had the 3rd overall pick in the NFL Draft. They selected a Guard from North Carolina named Ken Huff. He would play for 8 good years with the Colts, but they passed on a Hall of Fame Running Back. Who was that star taken with the 4th pick in 1975?

Answer: Walter Payton

The Colts had a very good running back in Lydell Mitchell and thus felt no need to draft Walter Payton. Walter is one the very greatest players of alltime. He would have looked good with horseshoes on his helmet.
8. Peyton Manning's first professional game was a preseason contest against the Seahawks in 1998. During that game he threw his very first professional pass. What was the result of that pass?

Answer: A touchdown to Marvin Harrison

Manning hit Harrison on a slant pass and Marvin raced 48 yards to the endzone. It was just a small look into the future as these two would go on to rewrite the Colt and NFL record books.
9. Through the years the Colts have won Division Championships in 3 different NFL divisions. The AFC East, The AFC South and what other NFL division?

Answer: Coastal Division

These are all real names of NFL Divisions. In 1967 the NFL was realigned. The Eastern and Western Conferences were split into four divisions. This format lasted until the NFL-AFL merger in 1970. The Colts were in the Coastal Division with the Atlanta Falcons, the L.A. Rams and the S.F. 49ers. The Colts won the Coastal Division in 1968 with a 13-1 record.
10. During the 1980s the Colts once went through an NFL season without winning a single game.

Answer: True

Believe it or not the 1982 Baltimore Colts finished the strike shortened season with a record of 0 wins, 8 losses and 1 tie. That entitled them to the first pick in the 1983 draft. They chose John Elway, who refused to play for the Colts and forced a trade to Denver. Many see this as the first domino to fall that led to the Mayflower Vans moving the Colts out of Baltimore in March 1984.
