He wasn't playing the game due to illness, and met a man who owned two chimps as pets. Ritchie borrowed them and bought them into the ground after the game, causing a huge disturbance in the dressing room.

Bill Lawry did the deed, but managed to make it look as though Frank Misson did it.

Richard Hadlee's response, before bowling his next over, was to request that the umpire ask Phil Edmonds to remove his helmet as it was 'upsetting my concentration, and I can't see the whites of his eyes!' Hadlee was told to get on with the game.
