Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which two neighbouring countries hosted the 2015 Cricket World Cup?

Answer: Australia and New Zealand

Both hosts played matches on day one. They each had comfortable wins, each batting first and bowling out their opposition. NZ beat Sri Lanka in Christchurch, while Australia beat England in Melbourne.
2. Match 1 of the 2015 Cricket World Cup saw New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 98 runs. How many centuries were scored by their batsmen?

Answer: 0

While they scored an impressive 6/331 from the allocated 50 overs, the NZ batsmen shared the runs around. Corey Anderson top scored with 75 from only 46 balls, and 5 others scored 29 or better. Jeevan Mendis was the best of Sri Lanka's bowlers, with 2/5 from 2 overs.
3. Match 2 of the 2015 Cricket World Cup saw Australia smash England's bowlers with a massive score of 342. Which Australian opening batsman scored an impressive 135 runs?

Answer: Aaron Finch

Finch hit 12 boundaries and three sixes in his 135, at better than a run a ball (facing 128). Warner scored only 22, Watson was out for a first ball duck, and Smith had a rare single figure score of 5. Glenn Maxwell and George Bailey both made handy half centuries to help the team to their big total.
4. Match 3 of the 2015 Cricket World Cup involved South Africa and Zimbabwe. What impressive feat did the South African number 5 and 6 batsmen achieve?

Answer: Centuries, not out

David Miller (138 not out) and JP Duminy (115 not out) played a big part in South Africa's score of 7/339. They went on to win by 62 runs after a valiant batting display from Zimbabwe fell short.
5. Match 4 of the 2015 Cricket World Cup was India v Pakistan. India batted first and scored 7/300. Did they go on to win the match?

Answer: Yes

Despite a couple of strong partnerships, Pakistan was not able to score quickly enough. They were bowled out in 47 overs with just 224 on the board, handing India a 76 run win. Mohammed Shami bowled particularly well, with figures of 4/35 from his 9 overs.
6. Which country, with a history of causing big upsets in the Cricket World Cup, beat West Indies in match 5 of the 2015 event?

Answer: Ireland

Ireland chased down an impressive total of 305 to win the match. Paul Stirling (92), Ed Joyce (84) and Niall O'Brien (79 not out) all contributed to their successful score. Incredibly, they reached the total with 25 balls to spare.
7. What interesting statistic was common to the first 5 matches of the 2015 Cricket World Cup?

Answer: The side batting first scored 300+

New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, India and West Indies all scored better than a run a ball when batting first. All except the West Indies won their respective matches by bowling out their opposition.
8. Scotland began their 2015 Cricket World Cup campaign in match 6 with a shaky start. What score did they reach after being bowled out by New Zealand?

Answer: 142

Perhaps surprisingly, the Scots had two half centuries in their small total. New Zealand chased the small target quite comfortably in the end, although they lost 7 wickets along the way.
9. Which team made their Cricket World Cup debut in 2015 in match 6 against Bangladesh?

Answer: Afghanistan

Afghanistan only established a national cricket team in 2001, so their rise to World Cup ranks was impressive. They beat Kenya, a former semi finalist, to qualify for the 2015 event. While they lost to Bangladesh in this match by 105, they certainly put up a fight at times, with some fine bowling in particular, holding their opposition to 4/130 at one stage.
10. Match 8 of the 2015 Cricket World Cup saw the United Arab Emirates (UAE) score a competitive 7/285 against Zimbabwe. Was this enough to give them victory?

Answer: No

Zimbabwe chased down the total in 48 overs, but UAE were in the match well and truly with a strong batting display and their bowlers sharing the wickets around. Sean Williams starred for Zimbabwe with an innings of 76 not out.
