Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Match 22 of the 2015 Cricket World Cup saw England score 309 batting first against Sri Lanka. Was this enough to secure England a victory?

Answer: No

Sri Lanka chased down this big total for the loss of only 1 wicket, and with 16 balls to spare. Both Thirimanne (139) and Sangakkara (117) scored unbeaten centuries.
2. Pakistan scored their first win at the 2015 Cricket World Cup with a win over which nation, featuring batsmen/wicket keeper Brendan Taylor, and all-rounder captain Elton Chigumbura?

Answer: Zimbabwe

Pakistan backed up from its record 250 run loss to West Indies with a 20 run win over Zimbabwe in a low scoring affair in Brisbane. Batting first, Pakistan scored 7/235, before bowling Zimbabwe out for 215 in the final over of their chase.
3. South Africa's impressive score against Ireland was the first time in a Cricket World Cup that a team had ever done what?

Answer: Scored consecutive totals over 400

South Africa's 4/411 was their second consecutive 400+ score, setting the second-highest team score in a World Cup. Hashim Amla opened with a big 159 from 128 balls, while du Plessis also scored a century with 109 from as many balls. Ireland were spirited in their chase, but fell 201 runs short. This also set another record, making South Africa the first team to win consecutive World Cup matches by 200 or more.
(Highest team score was India 5/413 vs Bermuda in 2007 World Cup).
4. Which team, captained by Mohammed Tauqir, fell short of Pakistan's total of 339 to hand them their second win of the 2015 World Cup?

Answer: United Arab Emirates

After close losses to Zimbabwe and Ireland, UAE struggled against the more established cricketing nations. They managed 210 against Pakistan, but this was 129 runs short of victory.
5. Australia scored 6/417 against Afghanistan. Was this a new Cricket World Cup record team score?

Answer: Yes

Australia eclipsed India's 5/413 against Bermuda in the 2007 World Cup. Opener David Warner starred with 178 from 133 balls, while Mitchell Johnson played a key role in the victory with 4/22 in keeping Afghanistan to just 142. This was also a new record World Cup winning margin of 275 runs.
6. Scotland set Bangladesh a big total of 319 to chase. How did Bangladesh respond?

Answer: They won with 6 wickets to spare

Tamim Iqbal (95) ensured a solid start to the Bangladesh innings, and Al Hasan and Rahman saw the team to the required total with 11 balls to spare. Interestingly the player of the match came from the losing side, with Scottish opener Kyle Coetzer earning the honour after scoring 156 runs from 134 balls.
7. Which team, with inconsistent results throughout the tournament, went down to India after being bowled out for 182 runs in Perth?

Answer: West Indies

The West Indies failed to bounce back from their big loss to South Africa, facing a very strong all-round bowling attack on a difficult Perth wicket. India chased the runs easily, finishing with 4 spare wickets and just over 10 overs left.
8. Which team suffered a surprise loss to Pakistan in match 29 at Eden Park after being bowled out for 202?

Answer: South Africa

Only AB de Villiers managed a score over 50 (with 77) as South Africa were bowled out for just the second time in the World Cup. This surprise result meant Pakistan were still in the hunt for a quarter final spot.
9. Ireland and Zimbabwe played a high-scoring encounter at Hobart, with Ireland batting first and scoring 8/331. Did Ireland go on to record another win on the back of this total?

Answer: Yes

It was a very close finish, coming down to the last over. Zimbabwe were 8/325, needing just 7 to win from the last over. Alex Cusack then took 2 wickets in 3 balls to finish the Zimbabwean innings, handing Ireland a 5 run win.
10. Australia scored a win over Sri Lanka in Sydney. What did BOTH teams manage to achieve?

Answer: Scores over 310

Glenn Maxwell starred in Australia's 9/376, with his first ever One Day century. He scored the second-fastest World Cup century in his 102 from just 53 balls. Australia went on to dismiss Sri Lanka for 312.
