Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the original name and location of the New York Yankees franchise during its first two years in the American League?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

The National League New York Giants blocked an attempt by the upstart American League to have a team in New York City. So, a team was placed in Baltimore from 1901-1902, called the Baltimore Orioles. This team moved to New York for the 1903 season.
2. What was the worst record by the original New York Yankees franchise in its first two seasons, 1901 and 1902 (they moved to NY on 1903)?

Answer: 1902 - Finished last in the American League with a record of 50-88

Due to a debt crisis the Baltimore Orioles were sold during the 1902 season to the owner of the New York Giants, with help from the principal owner of the Cincinnati Reds. Together they hatched a plan to release the best Baltimore Orioles players so they could be added to their Giants and Reds teams. This led to the Yankees winning just 36.2% of their games.
3. What was the franchise name from 1903 to 1912?

Answer: New York Highlanders

The Baltimore Orioles became the NY Highlanders. The name was given because of the team's elevated location in Upper Manhattan. The games were played at Hilltop Park. Also, Highlanders was short for Gordan's Highlanders. The team President was Joseph Gordon, who was of Scottish/Irish decent, and the Gordon Highlanders was the name of a noted Scottish military unit.
4. What was the worst record by the franchise during the ten seasons from their first season in New York in 1903 until the end of the 1912 season (they became the NY Yankees for the 1913 season)?

Answer: 1912 - Finished last in American League at 50-102-1

The 1912 season with a 32.9% winning percentage was just slightly worse than the 1908 campaign's 33.1%. The 1912 season was the final season at Hilltop Park for the team and their last as Highlanders!
5. What was the second-worst record by the franchise during the ten seasons from their first season in New York in 1903 until the end of the 1912 season (they became the NY Yankees for the 1913 season)?

Answer: 1908 - Finished last in American League at 51-103-1

The winning percentage for the 1908 New York Highlanders was just 33.1%, making it just slightly better than the 1912 campaign's 32.9%. It was so bad that the team lost 70 of the last 98 games, including a no-hit loss to Cy Young and being shut out for three consecutive games by the same pitcher, of course it was Walter Johnson!
6. What was the worst record by the New York Yankees from 1903, when they moved to Hilltop Park, through to 2008, their last season in the "House that Ruth Built" (the Old Yankee Stadium)?

Answer: 1913 - Finished seventh in American League at 57-94-2

The team moved from Hilltop Park to the Polo Grounds in 1913 (sharing same with New York Giants) and changed their name to the Yankees. With these major changes the team's record improved to a winning percentage of 37.7%, up nearly 5 points from the prior year.

The original Yankee stadium was built in 1923 and closed after the 2008 season. It was called the "House that Ruth Built", due to his popularity.
7. In which year did the team go 67-95 (41.4%) for last place in the American League East Division?

Answer: 1990

During the 1990 season the team's star, Don Mattingly, was hampered by a bad back and played only 102 games. The Yankees had no starters with an average over .285 or with more than 25 home runs. The pitchers gave up over 4.2 runs per game. The team did have Deion Sanders (yes THAT Deion Sanders), who contributed a .158 batting average and three home runs over 57 games.

The 1966 Team managed to win 44% of their games and the 1967 team won 44.4% of the time. The 1996 team won the World Series.
8. From origin of the franchise in 1901 through to 2008, their last season in the "House that Ruth Built" (the Old Yankee Stadium), what was the longest stretch when the franchise did not appear in a World Series?

Answer: 20 Years - 1901 through 1920

The Yankee franchise started real slow. It was not until 1921 that they reached their first World Series, which was Babe Ruth's second year with the club. The 1965 through 1975 and 1982 through 1995 are also long stretches of Yankee futility. The 1949 through 1962 period was quite fertile for the Yankees, winning nine of the twelve World Series in which they participated, and only missing the World Series in two years.
9. From origin of the franchise in 1901 through to 2008, their last season in the "House that Ruth Built" (the Old Yankee Stadium), the Yankees won 26 World Series Championships. How many times did they reach the World Series during this period, only to lose?

Answer: 13

The Yankees lost three of the first four World Series in which they participated. Then from 1927 through 1953 (27 seasons) the Yankees won fifteen of the sixteen World Series in which they participated going 61-20 in World Series games played. No wonder they wrote the book "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant" in 1954. This book led to the 1955 play "Damn Yankees".
10. From origin of the franchise in 1901 through to 2008, their last season in the "House that Ruth Built" (the Old Yankee Stadium), which National League franchise lost to the Yankees in the World Series the most times?

Answer: Dodgers

The "wait until next year" Brooklyn Dodgers managed to win the 1955 World Series against the Yankees, then after moving to Los Angeles they won two more titles over the Yankees. They did lose eight World Series to the Yankees along the way. The New York/San Francisco Giants played the Yankees seven times in the World Series, winning the first two and losing the last five.

The Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves had one win and three losses to the Yankees in World Series play. Only the Chicago/St. Louis Cardinals had a winning record after meeting the Yankees in multiple World Series matchups, going 3-2.
