Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did the Yankees officially become the New York Yankees?

Answer: 1913

The Yankees began in 1913 under the helm of manager Frank Chance. Chance took the ballclub to a 7th place finish in the American League. Catcher Ed Sweeney and outfielder Harry Wolter led the Yankees with 2 home runs each. The Yankees blossomed from the New York Highlanders which were in existence from 1903-1912.

The original name of the franchise was the Baltimore Orioles in 1901 and 1902.
2. Which of these Yankees set a team record with a batting average of .393?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The Babe did this way back in 1923. This was Ruth's 4th season with the Yankees, and fourth consecutive 30+ home run season. DiMaggio hit .381 in 1939, and Gehrig's tops was .379 in 1930. Derek Jeter's best was .349 in 1999.
3. Which of the following Yankee managers, helmed the team for 16 seasons?

Answer: Joe McCarthy

McCarthy led the team from 1931 to 1946. He managed the Chicago Cubs for 5 seasons prior, and the Red Sox for 3 seasons afterwards. During his reign with the Yankees, McCarthy took the team to 7 World Series Championships and 1 American League Pennant. From Bill Dickey, Lou Gehrig, and Babe Ruth in 1931, to Joe DiMaggio in 1946, McCarthy has seen baseball's greatest throughout the years. Joe McCarthy also won a National League Pennant with the Cubs in 1929.
4. In what year did the Yankees win their first World Series?

Answer: 1923

After losing 2 World Series in a row in 1921 and 1922, Miller Huggins finally had his way in 1923 against their rival New York Giants. The Yankees won the Series 4 games to 2. The Giants' Casey Stengel hit the first home run in the Series. The Yankees were led by Wally Pipp and Babe Ruth, along with the arms of Waite Hoyt and Herb Pennock. Waiting only 4 more seasons, the Yankees would find themselves winning two consecutive World Series in 1927 and 1928, beating the Pirates and the Cardinals.
5. In what year did the Yankees start playing at Yankee Stadium?

Answer: 1923

The Yankees played at the Polo Grounds for many years before moving into "Ruth's" house in 1923. The Yankees saw an attendance of 1,007,066 in this year that they won their first World Series. Ironically, this was less than the previous year at the Polo Grounds when 1,026,134 fans came out to see them.

However in both years, at the Polo Grounds and the new Yankee Stadium, the Yankees ranked 1st in attendance out of 8 teams in the American League.
6. In what year did Babe Ruth play in his first World Series?

Answer: 1915

Ruth was only in his 2nd year of baseball with the Boston Red Sox when they went to the World Series in 1915. The Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4 games to 1. Ironically, there were no home runs in the Series until the final game when Harry Hooper smacked 2 big ones for Boston. Ruth did not pitch in a World Series until 1916 where he won one game in his only Series appearance that year.

He went 14 innings in that game, striking out 4, walking 3, and allowing 6 hits.
7. Which of the following Yankee managers took the team to 7 World Series Championships?

Answer: Both Stengel and McCarthy

Two great managers of baseball, both McCarthy and Stengel took the Yankees to 7 World Series titles. Joe McCarthy was the first of the two greats to do it. His first was in 1932 with the backing of Ruth, Gehrig, Combs, and Lefty Gomez. They skunked the Cubs 4 games to 0.

The remaining WS titles under McCarthy came in 1936, '37, '38, '39, 1941, and 1943. Casey Stengel also had an award-winning cast of Joe DiMaggio, Johnny Mize, Allie Reynolds, to Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Elston Howard, and Whitey Ford, to name a very few. Stengel's first rise to glory was in 1949 by beating an all-star cast of Brooklyn Dodgers 4 games to 1.

This was Casey's first of 5 consecutive World Series titles. He beat the Dodgers 3 times along with the Phillies and Giants in this streak.

The remaining two were handed to him by the 1956 Dodgers who were still in Brooklyn, and the 1958 Milwaukee Braves.
8. What were the most losses this New York franchise has ever encountered in a season (during the 20th century)?

Answer: 103

Amazingly enough, the team lost 103 games in 1908. They were known as the New York Highlanders at the time. They were 51-103 under the helm of Clark Griffith. Only two pitchers finished in double-figures in the win category for the season, with Jack Chesbro winning 14 games but also lost 20, and Rube Manning winning 13 games but losing 16. Harry Niles' bat led the team with 4 home runs.
9. Which of the following has played more games in a Yankee uniform?

Answer: Mickey Mantle

Mantle leads this group by appearing in 2401 games in the pinstripes. He accomplished this from 1951 to 1968. He had 9,099 plate appearances for the team. Gehrig appeared in 2164 games, while Berra showed up for 2116 games. Although Ruth appeared in 2084 games as a Yankee, he also appeared in 391 games with the Red Sox, and another 28 with the Boston Braves before he retired in 1935 at the age of 40.
10. Which of these Yankees set a team record by hitting 23 triples in a season?

Answer: Earl Combs

Combs smacked 23 in 1927. He also batted .356 that year. His 23 triples ranked him tied for 22nd for season triples in the 20th century. Combs played his entire career with the Yankees from 1924 to 1935. Earl also hit 22 triples in 1930. He retired with 154 triples in 12 seasons which ranked him 48th for career triples in the 20th century. Averaging more than 12 triples per season is an accomplishment in itself.
