Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which two clubs set the record for the biggest home win, and what was the score?

Answer: West Bromwich Albion and Nottingham Forest (12-0)

WBA against Darwen in the season 1891-92, Forest against Leicester Fosse in 1908-09.
2. Which three clubs set the record for the most successive wins, when they won 13 straight?

Answer: Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland and Preston North End

They all won 13 games in a row. Tottenham Hotspur won their first 11 games of season 1960-61 (the year they won the double), and the last 2 games of the previous season. Sunderland won 13 in a row from 14th November 1891 to 2nd April 1892. Preston won 13 straight in the same season, from 24th October 1891 to 5th March 1892 (they lost their next match 1-4 away to Sunderland, who were League Champions for that season).
3. Which two clubs were responsible for the biggest away wins, and what was the score?

Answer: 1-9 v. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sunderland

Wolverhampton in the season 1955-56 against Cardiff City, Sunderland against Newcastle United in 1908-09.
4. Which club set the record for the longest run without a win, when they failed to win in 28 consecutive matches?

Answer: Portsmouth

Portsmouth didn't win in 28 consecutive games played in Division 1, starting 29th November 1958 until 29th August 1987. In the 1958-59 season they played their last 24 games without a win, and were relegated after 2 seasons in Division 1. They returned in 1987 and did not record their first win until the 5th games of the season (they were relegated at the end of the season, 1987-88)
5. What was the highest scoring draw?

Answer: 6-6

Leicester City and Arsenal in season 1929-30.
6. What was the highest number of goals scored (total) in one match?

Answer: 14

Aston Villa v Accrington Stanley 12-2 (1891-92), and Tottenham Hotspur v Everton 10-4 (1958-59).
7. Which club had the longest run without defeat, and how many games?

Answer: Nottingham Forest (42)

They were unbeaten for a year (across two seasons) from 26th November 1977 to 25th November 1978: being the last 26 games of season 1977-78 (when they won the League Championship for the first time in the club's history, with Brian Clough as their manager) plus the first 16 games of season 1978-79.

The run ended in when Forest lost 0-2 at Anfield (Liverpool were crowned League Champions that season, and Forest finished runners-up). Forest instead won the Eurpoean Cup (as a consolation prize!), and became the city with the smallest population to win the European Cup.

They won the European Cup again the next season, and thus became the first club to have won more European Cups than domestic championships.
8. What was the longest run without a draw?

Answer: 51 games

Aston Villa never drew for a period of almost 2 years (across 2 seasons), between 1st January 1891 and 17th December 1892.
9. Which club had the longest streak of successive defeats, and how many games in a row did they lose?

Answer: Manchester United (14)

They lost every game played from 26th April 1930 through to 25th October 1930, being the last 2 games of season 1929-30, and the first 12 games of season 1930-31 (ManU finished the season in last place, and were relegated).
10. Which club played the most successive games without scoring a goal, when they failed to score in 10 successive league matches?

Answer: Sunderland

Sunderland didn't score in ten games, from 27th November 1976 until 5th February 1977.
