Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Don't look at me like that, my nickname is one of a certain sweet but I am a tough cookie. In the 20th century, I only spent four seasons outside the top tier of the Football League. Which Founder Member of the Football League am I?

Answer: Everton

Everton (founded 1878 as St Domingo's) were also a founder member of the Premier League in 1992. They were first relegated in 1930, returning after one season as Second Division champions (1930-31). Their second relegation came in 1951, this time they returned after three seasons downstairs having finished Second Division runners-up in 1953-54. There are a few explanations as to the origin of the nickname, "The Toffees", most of which pertain to the existence of a sweet shop in the vicinity of the club in its early days.
None of the other clubs listed were a founder member.
2. I may seem unstable for a few, however, in 1994-95 I became the first Founder Member to win the Premier League title. It happened under manager Kenny Dalglish, after an excruciating 81-year long wait - no wonder my motto is "Arte et labore" ("by Skill and hard work"). Which Founder Member of the Football League am I?

Answer: Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers (founded 1875) were also a founder member of the FA Premier League in 1992. On the last day of the 1994-95 season, losing 1-2 at his his previous home ground of Anfield, "King Kenny" Dalglish was biting his finger nails waiting for the score of the match between Manchester United and West Ham United (it finished in a 1-1 draw).

A horrible miss by Andy Cole in added time signaled that Blackburn had finally won their third title; the first two were achieved in 1911-12 and 1913-14. One of their famous supporters and ex-honorary VPs was the Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher. None of the other clubs listed was a founder member.
3. Hey, I was also a founder member of the Premier League when it started in 1992. Paul McGrath and Stylian Petrov are instated into my Hall Of Fame. I am Peter Schmeichel's second team in English football. Which Founder Member of the Football League am I?

Answer: Aston Villa

Aston Villa (founded 1874) are based in Birmingham. Villa won the First Division title in 1980-81 and subsequently seized the European Cup and Super Cup. Club captain Stylian Petrov retired from professional football in 2013, a year after being diagnosed with acute leukemia. Albeit in different eras, both McGrath (1989-1996) and Schmeichel (2001-02) made a move from Manchester United to Aston Villa.
None of the other clubs listed was a founder member.
4. Well, what can I say? In 2011, I came close to winning the FA Cup having reached my first ever final, but lost 0-1 to Manchester City. Port Vale is another club which plays in my city. Which Founder Member of the Football League am I?

Answer: Stoke City

Known as "The Potters", Stoke City (founded 1863 as Stoke Ramblers) indeed do not shine very often. Having lost the League Cup final in 1963-64 to Leicester City by an aggregate score of 3-4, their first major title finally came 1971-72, a 2-1 League Cup win over Chelsea with the great Gordon Banks wearing the goalkeeper's gloves for them at the time.
None of the other clubs listed was a founder member.
5. I was founded in 1882, and have played at the same football ground almost ever since. My nickname coincides with the colour of my home kit. In 2009-10, I returned to the top flight but failed to keep my place and got relegated after just one season. Which Founder Member of the Football League am I?

Answer: Burnley

Known as "The Clarets", Burnley have played at Turf Moor since 1883. They won the FA Cup in 1914 and the First Division title in 1920-21 and 1959-60. Their abrupt return to the top flight in 2009-10 came after a 38-year long loitering in the lower tiers of English league football.
None of the other clubs listed was a founder member.
6. I can still remember this as if it happened yesterday - I won the FA Cup in 1894. I spent the most of my tenure outside the top flight of English football. My nickname is "The Magpies". Which Founder Member of the Football League am I?

Answer: Notts County

Notts County (founded 1862) hail from Nottingham, where the senior club has usually been Nottingham Forest. Nottingham derbies have become a rare sight, the first of which in the 21st century was a superb League Cup 3-3 thriller in 2011 with Forest edging a penalty shootout win. In the 20th century, they spent only 26 seasons in the top flight of English football, of which 22 were before 1927 and only four of which were much much later (1981-1984 and 1991-92).

Notts County have bounced up and down between the four tiers of English football more than any other team, founder member or non-founder: when they were crowned champions of League Two (the fourth tier) at the end of the 2009-2010 season, they earned their 13th promotion since 1888 -- and in between they had been relegated 15 times! Another "unenviable" record: the 2009-10 season was the 110th season of League football in England, and no team had played more League games than Notts County (4572) vs. the "next best" of 4546 games played by Preston North End. At the other end of the scale, founder member Everton had played 4344 games during those 110 seasons; there are 38 games a year in the top tier vs. 46 games a year in the three lower tiers.

None of the other clubs listed was a founder member. Newcastle United (founded 1892), who joined the Football League in 1893-94, are also nicknamed "The Magpies"; however, they sport a richer trophy cabinet than Notts County. Unsurprisingly, both clubs play in a striped black and white kit.
7. Recently I find myself delving into long lost memories of days past, and who can blame me, with the present being pretty dim? In 2011-12, I was relegated from the Premier League, and the season after I got relegated from the Championship. Which Founder Member of the Football League am I?

Answer: Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolverhampton Wanderers (founded 1877 as St. Luke's) are commonly referred to by their nickname, "Wolves". They had a golden age in the 1950s, when they won three League championships and an FA Cup, and a silver age in the 1970s, when they won two League Cups and finished runners-up of the UEFA Cup. Ever since, they have been suffering from instability and float aimlessly between the Football League's various tiers.
None of the other clubs listed was a founder member.
8. Don't you know me, I was the first champion of the Football League (season 1888-89). More so, the man and the legend Bill Shankly played in my ranks for sixteen years. The Everton and thence Manchester United manager David Moyes also played here and managed me for four years before moving on to Everton in 2002. Which Founder Member of the Football League am I?

Answer: Preston North End

Preston North End (founded 1863) may be a little known club, but it won the first two seasons of the Football League, and the first ever double (having won also the FA Cup in 1889). Apart from Bill Shankly (1933-1949) and David Moyes (played 1993-1999, managed 1998-2002), Bobby Chralton (1974-75) and David Beckham (1994-1995) also had short spells with this club. With Liverpool's most iconic figure, Bill Shankly, playing there for so long, you just had to rule out their local rival, Everton. One of Bill Shankly's famous quotes: "This city has two great football teams - Liverpool and Liverpool reserves".
9. Appearances can be misleading, so I heard. Which of the following clubs is NOT one of the Founder Members of the Football League?

Answer: Manchester United

Manchester United (founded 1878 as Newton Heath) joined the Football League "only" in the 1892-93 season, four years after it started. In their years under Sir Alex (1986-2013), they reinstated themselves as one of Europe's top clubs. In 1998-99 Manchester United became the first club to achieve the Treble winning the League title, the FA Cup plus the UEFA Champions League.

When Sir Alex retired after the end of the 2012-13 season, they had won 20 top tier titles. Derby County (founded 1884), Bolton Wanderers (founded 1874 as Christ Church), West Bromwich Albion (founded 1878 West Bromwich Strollers) were all Founder Members of the Football League.
10. I was there when it happened in 1888 and vanished into thin air shortly afterwards. A distant relative of mine still hovers in the lower tiers of the Football League. Which Founder Member of the Football League am I?

Answer: Accrington

Accrington (founded 1876) played in the first five seasons of the Football League. In 1892-93 they finished 15th, one spot above a certain Newton Heath (aka Manchester United), and were relegated. Choosing not to play in the Second Division pre-empted their demise in 1896.

Accrington Stanley (founded 1891-1966, reformed 1968) also come from Accrington, Lancashire. Though often mistaken for it, it is not the same club as Accrington (RIP).
