It was played in England in the 1820s and brought to the United States and Canada in 1893.

The winning team does not get to keep the cup, but each player gets their name engraved on it. The cup is kept in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. In 1893, Lord Stanley of Preston donated the Stanley Cup to be awarded to the amateur hockey championship of Canada. In 1910, the teams in the NHL began competing for it.

There are not innings in a hockey game, there are periods. Innings are for baseball and cricket. In hockey, each period is 20 minutes long and there is a 10 minute break in-between them.

In the regular season over time lasts five minutes, NHL games can't end in a tie in the playoffs, so the teams have to keep playing until there is a winner. One of the longest game ever played was in Montreal on March 24, 1956. It was game one of the semi-final round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs between Detroit and Montreal.

It ended when Detroit's Mud Bruneteau scored the games only goal in the sixth overtime period after 176 minutes and 30 seconds of game play.
