Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Apart from basic points for landing the jumps, the International Skating Union (ISU) Judging System allows for bonus points to be awarded based on what criteria?

Answer: Grade of execution (GOE)

The maximum number of GOE points possible for jumps according to the ISU Judging System is three points. The grade of execution factors in position of takeoff, landing, and in the air, degrees of rotation, and overall performance of the jump.

The number of rotations, type of jump, and whether or not the jump is part of a combination all contribute towards basic points, not GOE.
2. Invented by a Swedish skater, the skater swings into the air off the inside edge of the blade. Which jump is this?

Answer: Salchow

One of three edge jumps, a salchow requires the skater to take off on the inside edge, complete at least one revolution, and land on the outside edge of the skater's other foot.

The jump is named after the first man to perform it, renowned Swedish skater Ulrich Salchow.
3. What defining characteristic of the loop jump's take off differentiates that jump from the other jumps?

Answer: It is on the back outside edge

The loop jump is another edge jump. In performing a loop, the skater leaves the ice on the outside edge of a blade, landing on the same edge of the same foot. Loop jumps can be anywhere from one revolution to four revolutions long. The jump was named after the compulsory figure of the same name.
4. Of the toe jumps, which one has the skater taking off from the inside edge?

Answer: Flip

When jumping a flip, the skater takes off on the inside edge of one blade, while pushing off behind with the toe pick of the blade on the other foot. The landing is effected on the outside edge of whichever foot was used for toeing.
5. Which toe jump requires the skater begin the jump on the outside edge of one foot?

Answer: Lutz

The skater enters the jump on the outside edge of the blade, while toeing off on the other foot. The skater lands on the outside edge of the toeing foot.
The lutz jump was invented by Alois Lutz.
6. Out of all the jumps, the jump that garners the least points is very similar to the Loop jump. Which is it?

Answer: Toe loop

The toe loop is almost identical to the loop in that the skater takes off on the outside edge, and lands on the same edge of the same foot. The difference is that when taking off, the skater uses the toe pick of the other blade to take off, thus making the toe loop a toe jump instead of an edge jump, like the loop. Due to the simplicity of the jump, it is worth the least points of all the jumps in figure skating events across the board.
7. What defining aspect separates an axel jump from the rest of the jumps?

Answer: The jump involves half rotations

The skater takes off on the outside edge of one foot in the forward position, landing on the outside edge of the other foot. However, the main difference is that axel jumps involve half rotations. An axel jump is one and a half revolutions in the air. Double and triple axels are two and a half and three and a half revolutions, respectively. A jump with a half revolution is called a waltz jump.
Axel Paulsen gave the jump his name when he performed the first axel.
8. When a skater spins on one straight leg with the body perpendicular to the leg, and the other leg on the same plane as the body, what spin is it?

Answer: Camel

Also known as a parallel spin, the camel is one of the basic spin positions. The other two are the sit spin and the upright spin.
9. What is the difference between the two similar spins, the layback spin and the haircutter spin?

Answer: Leg position of the free leg

In both spins, the skater is spinning on one leg with the body leant back and over. In the layback spin, the free leg is bent and dangling, but in the haircutter spin the skater catches the free leg and brings it up to the head. That leads to the haircutter spin being referred to as the catch foot layback.
10. Apart from being comprised of different moves, footwork step sequences are differentiated by the shape of the path of the sequence. Which of these is *not* a name for one of the three basic shapes?

Answer: Angular

In a straight line footwork sequence, the skater follows a straight path through the rink. A circular sequence describes a circle or some sort of curve. A serpentine step sequence may zigzag or follow a squiggly pattern.
