Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was in goal for England when they won the World Cup in 1966?

Answer: Gordon Banks

Gordon conceded only three goals the entire tournament, a penalty against Portugal in the semi-final, and two against Germany in the final. One of the greatest keepers of the 20th century, he made 73 caps between 1963 and 1972. His international career was cut short by a car crash in 1972 which resulted in the loss of sight in his right eye.
2. Which England keeper retired with 125 international caps?

Answer: Peter Shilton

Shilton made his England debut in 1972 replacing Gordon Banks, and only a fierce battle for the number one jersey with Ray Clemence in the 1970's stopped him from achieving a far higher total. Famously beaten by the "hand of god" in the quarterfinal of Mexico 1986, Shilton finally retired after the 1990 World Cup where England lost on penalties to West Germany in the semi-final.
3. Ray Clemence allowed whose shot to go through his legs in Scotland's 2-1 win in 1976?

Answer: Kenny Dalglish

Clemence and Dalglish both played in the great Liverpool sides of the 1970s and early 1980s which saw Clemence picking up three European Cup winners medals. Clemence was unlucky enough to be in his prime alongside Peter Shilton, but still made 61 appearances for England.
4. Which England keeper began his career at Watford before moving to Liverpool in 1992?

Answer: David James

A keeper with massive natural talent David James became Englands first choice keeper in 1997. Concentration problems plagued his career though resulting in the nickname "Calamity" after some high profile errors for Liverpool in decisive English Premiership games against Manchester United.
5. Which keeper was known as "The Cat"?

Answer: Peter Bonetti

Peter made seven appearances for England but his last game was his most remembered for all the wrong reasons. He stood in for Gordon Banks who was taken ill on the eve of the 1970 World Cup quarterfinal, where England were taking on West Germany in a repeat of the 1966 World Cup Final. With England 2-0 up, all was going fine until a weak Beckenbauer shot beat Bonetti and West Germany went on to win 3-2.
6. Who made his debut for England in August 2006 against Greece and won his dad a big money bet in the process?

Answer: Chris Kirkland

When Chris was 11 years old, his dad placed a bet that his son would play for England before he was 30. Chris was involved in several England squads before finally making his debut and allowing his dad to collect his winnings.
7. How many penalties did David Seaman actually save during the two penalty shootouts of Euro 96?

Answer: 1

Seaman saved Nadal's penalty in the quarterfinal where Hierro also missed in Englands 4-2 shootout victory against Spain. Germany then went on to score all of their penalties, defeating England 6-5 in the semi-final.
8. Which of these goalkeepers appeared in an England squad, but never made a full international appearance?

Answer: Kevin Pressman

Nigel Spink and Alec Stepney both made only one appearance despite both winning the European Cup with their clubs (Alec with Man Utd in 1968 and Nigel with Aston Villa in 1982). Dave Beasent made two appearances and went to the 1990 World Cup as Peter Shilton's understudy.
9. During the 1970 World Cup, Gordon Banks made an almost impossible save to tip whose header over the bar?

Answer: Pele

Pele said it was the greatest save he had ever seen. With Banks covering his near-post, Jairzinho crossed the ball from the touchline to the far post. Pele rose, and with Banks scrambling across his goal, headed the ball down into the bottom corner. Banks somehow managed to dive down and slightly behind himself, tip the ball to safety.
10. What error led to David Seaman being dropped by England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson?

Answer: Letting in a goal direct from a corner

David Seaman was a fantastic keeper for England but had a few moments in his career he would rather forget. The corner was scored by Artim Sakiri of Macedonia in a Euro 2004 qualifying game in 2002. He was lobbed by Ronaldinio of Brazil in the quarterfinal of the World Cup in 2002, and Nayim beat him from 45 yards in the Cup Winners Cup Final in 1995. Paul Robinson conceded from a back pass against Croatia in Euro 2008 qualifying.
