Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
Billy Wright played in centre field and represented England from 1946 until 1959, many times as captain. He became the first man in the world to win one hundred caps for his country. Four of the players listed were in the FIFA World Cup winning squad of 1966. Gordon Banks was a goalkeeper, George Cohen was a defender and Bobby Charlton played in mid field. Jimmy Greaves was a forward, but didn't play in the final - the other three did.
Gary Lineker was a striker who played for England between1984 and 1992 while Paul Gascoigne played for the international team from 1988 to 1998 as a midfielder. Alan Shearer was a striker who represented England between 1992 and 2000 while Teddy Sheringham performed the same role from 1993 until 2002. Matt Le Tissier, who was born in Guernsey which is why his name sounds more French, played in midfield between 1994 and 1997.
Moving into the twenty-first century we have a striker in Peter Crouch (2005-2010), a forward and midfielder in Wayne Rooney (2003-2018) and John Terry, a defender who represented England between 2003 and 2012. To bring us up to date are strikers Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford, who first played for England in 2015 and 2016 respectively and a goalkeeper in Jordan Pickford, whose first appearance was in 2017.
The wrong answers consisted of three rugby union internationals, three cricketers, two athletes (track and field) and two English tennis players.
