Answer: Republic of Ireland

Mark Lawrenson had 73 games for home town club Preston North End (1974-77) before his transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion (1977-81). He left the Seagulls in 1981 and then had seven successful seasons with Liverpool. Although born in England, because of his ancestry, Mark chose to play for the Republic of Ireland where he gained 39 caps.

He had one season at Barnet (88-89) before retiring from playing. He has since worked in the media.

Defender Jim Beglin had 64 appearances for Liverpool (1983-89) before his June 1989 transfer to Leeds United. After 19 games for Leeds, Jim had short loan spells at Plymouth Argyle and Blackburn Rovers. He gained 15 caps for the Republic of Ireland, the home of his first club Shamrock Rovers. Since his early retirement due to injury, Beglin has worked in the media as a soccer pundit.

Central defender Kevin Ratcliffe joined Everton as an apprentice in 1977 and made his debut in 1980. He went on to play 348 games for the team, many as club captain. His 1991 transfer to Dundee (4 games) was followed by short spells at Cardiff City, Nottingham Forest, and Derby County. In 1994, he was appointed player-manager of Chester City. He was made full-time manager of the club in 1995, a position he held until 1999. A very speedy defender, Kevin gained 59 caps playing for Wales where he later worked in the media.

A firm favourite with the Liverpool fans, Ronnie Whelan had 362 games for the club (1979-94). During his distinguished career he gained 53 caps playing for the Republic of Ireland. Ronnie had 34 appearances for Southend United after his 1994 move from Liverpool.

He was made manager of the club in 1995, a position he held for only one season. He never played for Millwall, Darlington, or Bury.

Midfielder Peter Reid had 225 games for Bolton Wanderers (1974-82) before his move to Everton (1982-89). Peter spent one season with Q.P.R. (1989-90). He then signed for Manchester City (1990-93), one of several clubs he would later manage. He gained 13 caps playing for England. In 2008, he was appointed the manager of the Thailand national team.

In May of 1971, Kenny Dalglish scored 6 goals in his Celtic (1971-77) debut. A Liverpool legend, Kenny played 515 games for the club (1977-90). He was capped 102 times by Scotland and scored over 300 goals throughout his career. He was appointed player-manager by Liverpool in 1985, then manager in 1990.

He left the club in 1991 and became the manager of Blackburn Rovers, a position he held for 4 seasons. Dalglish then had 20 months in charge at Newcastle United. In 1999, he returned to Celtic and became director of football.

Gary Lineker, a striker, began his career with his home town club Leicester City (1978-85). He played 194 games for the club scoring 95 goals. His brief spell at Everton (1985-86) produced 30 goals in 41 appearances. Gary had 105 games for Barcelona with 43 goals to his credit.

He had a further 105 games for Spurs (1989-92) and hit the net 67 times. His 80 caps for England (1984-92) produced 48 goals. He never played for Real Madrid. Lineker is an ex-pro who has worked in the media.

Striker Graeme Sharpe had 40 games for Dumbarton (1978-80) before his transfer to Everton (1980-91). Graeme had over 300 games for Everton scoring more than 100 goals. He began his Oldham Athletic (1991-97) career as a player, then player-manager and later full time manager. Graeme never played for either of the two Glasgow giants. Since retiring from the game, he has worked at the local press and radio in Liverpool.

Though born in South Africa, Craig Johnston spent his early life in Australia. Craig overcame an appalling bout of osteomyelitis in his childhood, and doctors had even suggested an amputation of one of his legs. Thankfully, his mother refused. Despite this setback, Liverpool fans will always remember his typical Aussie 100% commitment when playing the game. Middlesborough (1977-81) and Liverpool (1981-88) were his only two English clubs.

Midfielder Kevin Sheedy played 51 games for Hereford (1975-78). He only played 3 times for Liverpool (1978-82) before his move to Everton (1982-92), one of the few to have played for both the Merseyside rivals. Kevin had a single season at Newcastle United (1992-93) and one season at Blackpool before retiring from playing in 1994. Though born in Wales, he chose through ancestry to play for the Republic of Ireland where he gained 46 caps.

In 2006, Sheedy joined the Everton coaching staff.
