Deane scored after just five minutes in Sheffield United's 2-1 home win against Manchester United. United lost their first two games of the season but went on to win the title finishing ten points clear of Aston Villa.

Teddy Sheringham scored the only goal of the game as Nottingham Forest beat Liverpool 1-0. Sheringham left the club two weeks later when he joined Tottenham Hotspur. He finished the season as the Premier League's top goalscorer.

They had been fined 3 points by the FA for illegally postponing a match against Blackburn Rovers earlier in the season.
