Answer: Brian Deane (Sheffield United)

Deane scored after just five minutes in Sheffield United's 2-1 home win against Manchester United. United lost their first two games of the season but went on to win the title finishing ten points clear of Aston Villa.

Teddy Sheringham scored the only goal of the game as Nottingham Forest beat Liverpool 1-0. Sheringham left the club two weeks later when he joined Tottenham Hotspur. He finished the season as the Premier League's top goalscorer.

Cup final defeats against Leicester City in the League Cup (1-0 after a 1-1 draw) and Chelsea in the FA Cup (2-0) capped a disappionting season for Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough, Nottingham Forest & Sunderland were the teams relegated. The following year Forest won the Division 1 title, Middlesbrough came in 2nd and Sunderland finished 4th. Sunderland just missed out on the return after being beaten in the play-offs.
