Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who did Aston Villa beat 3-1 on the opening day of the season (they were runners-up in the previous season)?

Answer: Manchester United

Manchester United finshed the season as champions. Villa won with goals from Ian Taylor, Mark Draper and a penalty from Dwight Yorke. Villa went on to finish in 4th place in the Premiership which was a huge improvement on the previous season's 18th when they were nearly relegated.
2. Manchester United legend Mark Hughes made a surprise move to which club?

Answer: Chelsea

Hughes joined Chelsea in the summer of 1995 scoring 39 goals in 123 games. Mark later went to play for Southampton and Everton before retiring with Blackburn Rovers in 2002. He then managed the Welsh national side before becoming manager of Blackburn Rovers (2004) and Manchester City (2008).
3. Which of the following Leeds United players is *not* from Africa?

Answer: Rod Wallace

Both Radebe and Masinga hail from South Africa and Tony Yeboah from Ghana. Rod Wallace is English born and bred, although as a black footballer he is likely to have African heritage.
4. Which stadium saw the lowest average Premiership attendance that season?

Answer: Selhurst Park

Although The Dell (home of Southampton) had the lowest capacity (15,000), Wimbledon's games at Selhurst Park saw an average of 13,000. Relegated Bolton Wanderers and QPR saw crowd averages of 18,000 at Burden Park and 15,000 at Loftus Road respectively.
5. The Liverpool v Newcastle United game proved to be a classic. What was the final score?

Answer: 4-3 to Liverpool

This seven goal thriller was voted as the most exciting sporting event in Sky Sports first ten year history. Robbie Fowler and Stan Collymore got two goals each for Liverpool with Stan getting the winner in the 90th minute. Amazingly, exactly the same score line was repeated a year later with Liverpool reliant on another final minute winner!
6. Who were Aston Villa's shirt sponsors for the 1995-96 season?

Answer: AST Computers

AST Computers were shirt sponsors from 1995 until 1998 until LDV enjoyed a two year sponsorship deal. NTL were sponsors from 2000 to 2002. Mita Copiers had their name on the Villa shirt for ten years starting in 1983 and ending in 1993.
7. Which top striker found the net against Bolton Wanderers four times in one match?

Answer: Robbie Fowler

Robbie scored four goals in Liverpools 5-2 victory over the Wanderers at the end of September.
8. Which of the following players left Wimbledon to go up north in 1995?

Answer: Warren Barton to Newcastle United

Barton became the world's most expensive defender when he joined Newcastle for £4 million. It was another two years before Holdsworth became a Bolton player. Robbie Earle never played for Manchester City and Leonardson never played for Boro. They both finished the season at Wimbledon.
9. Both Merseyside derbies ended in draws.

Answer: False

Although Everton were held to a 1-1 draw at home, they did achieve a shock 2-1 victory at Anfield thanks to two strikes from Andrei Khanchelskis, who was also the scorer in the other match. Robbie Fowler scored Liverpool's goals in the final few minutes of both games.
10. Which manager brought Dennis Bergkamp to England in the summer of 1995?

Answer: Bruce Rioch

The new Arsenal manager signed Bergkamp for £7.5 million from Inter Milan. He struggled at first but went on to become an Arsenal legend under Arsene Wenger, who replaced Rioch in 1996. George Graham had been sacked as Arsenal manager in 1995 follow allegations of corruption. Alex Ferguson was of course manager of Manchester United, for whom Bergkamp has never played.
