Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Jack Buck's call of "I don't believe what I just saw!" has gone down as one of the greatest calls ever. Who hit the game winning home run off of future Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley?

Answer: Kirk Gibson

Gibson's home run was unexpected as he was hobbled by injuries. If he had not hit a home run there were concerns he would not even be able to run to first base. It was his only appearance in the 1988 Series.
2. "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!" Russ Hodges shouted over the radio as this player homered off Ralph Branca in a playoff to determine the 1951 National League champion.

Answer: Bobby Thomson

The game was the third game of a three game playoff after the Dodgers blew a huge lead in the standings over the Giants. Thomson was understandably ecstatic in the postgame interview, saying he felt he never touched the ground going around the bases. Branca, on the other hand, was more downtrodden asking reporters to just "Leave me alone".

Interesting side note...the next batter after Thomson would have been Willie Mays, who would go on to end his career in 1973 having hit 660 career home runs.
3. 2011 World Series - Game 6. This player's home run to center field at Busch Stadium in extra innings forced a deciding Game 7 between the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers.

Answer: David Freese

The Cardinals were down to their final strike twice in this game. Freese also tripled home the tying run in the bottom of the ninth before sending St. Louis into delirium with his bottom of the 11th inning homer. St. Louis would go on to win their 11th World Series and Freese would be named World Series MVP.
4. 1960 World Series Game 7 - This man got to live every boy's fantasy by hitting a Game 7, bottom of the 9th inning, walk off home run to give his Pirates a World Series championship.

Answer: Bill Mazeroski

This home run possibly sealed Bill Mazeroski's 2001 Hall of Fame induction. Without it, even though he had a solid career as a defensive player, he would most likely not be inducted into Cooperstown.
5. 1993 World Series Game 6 - The second ever walk-off home run to end a World Series. The Toronto Blue Jays repeated as World Champions thanks to this man's home run off of Mitch Williams.

Answer: Joe Carter

The home run continued the frustration for Philadelphia Phillies fans as their team had only won one World Series Championship (1980) in their history (dating back to the 1880s). The Phillies would eventually win another title in 2008.
6. October 1, 1932 - Did he call his shot? Did he not? Depends on who you ask. Regardless this home run is considered one of the first famous home runs in World Series history.

Answer: Babe Ruth

The Cubs lost the Series to the Yankees in four games to continue their World Series drought. They won back to back titles in 1907 and 1908.
7. 1985 National League Championship Series Game 5 - A light hitting switch hitter who had never homered while hitting left handed....until as Jack Buck called "____ corks one into right down the line....this is gonna be a home run!!! GO CRAZY FOLKS! GO CRAZY!"

Answer: Ozzie Smith

In a bit of foreshadowing, on the telecast of this game there was an overlay saying Smith had never homered from the left side of the plate just before he hit the home run. Tom Niedenfeuer would give up that home run plus a home run to Jack Clark in Game 6 to send the Cardinals to the World Series against their cross-state opponents, the Kansas City Royals, in the I-70 Series.
8. July 24, 1983. The Royals and Yankees were heated rivals. When this Royal hit a home run which, at the time, was disallowed due to too much pine tar on the bat, the future Hall-of-Famer went into a rage. Who was he?

Answer: George Brett

After an appeal to the league commissioner by the Royals, the home run was upheld and the game would be played from the point just after the home run. The Royals would eventually win.
9. October 2, 1978 - In a one-game playoff to determine the American League East Division championship between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees, this man shocked all of New England by hitting a home run over the Green Monster, propelling the Yankees to what would be their 22nd World Series championship.

Answer: Bucky Dent

Bucky Dent is not a name to mention among polite company in Red Sox nation. It should be noted that the Red Sox had squandered a large division lead (through poor play over the last few weeks of the regular season) over the Yankees, forcing this game.

It added to the woes of Boston fans who had waited since 1918 for a World Series title. They would end up waiting until 2004 before finally coming out on top again.
10. April 8, 1974. Despite receiving numerous death threats, this man persevered on his way to breaking one of baseball's most cherished records with his home run off of Dodger pitcher Al Downing.

Answer: Hank Aaron

Racial tensions were what led to the death threats. Hank Aaron (an African-American) was attempting to break the career home run record of Babe Ruth (a Caucasian). This home run gave Aaron 715 career home runs, leading to his final tally of 755 which would stand as the record until Barry Bonds surpassed him. Aaron hit his home run in Atlanta as a member of the Braves.
