Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Darren Lockyer does not play this position.

Answer: lock

Lock is the back player in a scrum, they 'lock' the scrum behind the second row. Darren Lockyer is a talented full-back/five-eighth who has captained Brisbane Broncos, Queensland and Australia.
2. In this bath tub, all players are able to recover from injury.

Answer: ball

Rugby league is one of the most popular ball sports in Australia. It is played in winter and uses an oval ball, similar to the balls used for rugby league in England and also the ball for rugby union.
3. It's interesting that R. Young played two games for Newtown between 1959 and 1960.

Answer: try

A try is worth four points in rugby league (but was worth three points prior to 1983). R. Young (given name unknown) scored 5 goals in those 2 games, giving him a career total of 10 points.
4. For two dollars and one cent, Rebecca can buy merchandise of her favourite team.

Answer: centre

A centre in rugby league plays just inside the wingers. Some of the most successful centres have been Mal Meninga (a former Australian captain) and Andrew Ettinghausen (who played for the Cronulla Sharks for 17 consecutive seasons, alternating between centre and wing).
5. I can't think of any players who have twin girls.

Answer: wing

But I'm sure there are some out there! Let me know! There are two wingers in a rugby league team and they tend to be the fastest runners. They often score a lot of tries. Three Australian representatives who were wingers crossed over to rugby union in the early 2000s: Mat Rogers, Wendell Sailor and Lote Tuqiri. Nathan Blacklock also crossed over to union but came back to rugby league and his team, the St George Illawarra Dragons.
6. "Brad, don't trip! Rope mazes can be hard to manoeuvre," the coach said at training.

Answer: prop

A prop plays in the front row of the scrum (there are three front row players in a scrum, two props with a hooker in between them). Props are also responsible for hitting the ball up (gaining metres by making runs with the ball directly into the opposing defensive line).
7. The logo of Eastern Suburbs is a Rooster, not a Chook. Ergo you cannot call them the Hens, either.

Answer: hooker

The Eastern Suburbs rugby league club was founded in 1908 and is the only club to have played in every season since. The other foundation clubs either became defunct, merged, or in the case of South Sydney, were dismissed from the competition for 2000 and 2001. Each team has one hooker and his role is to rake the ball in a scrum, and to play dummy-half. Famous hookers include Benny Elias and Geoff Toovey.
8. Many people prefer Eels players to players from other teams.

Answer: referee

The Parramatta Eels club was formed in 1947 and their first three premiership wins were in 1981, 1982 and 1983. There is one main referee in a game of rugby league, plus two linesmen and a video referee. There has been discussion in the early 2000s about introducing interchange referees.
9. Fans of Queensland and the Broncos would often yell themselves hoarse screaming "Go Alfie!" at games.

Answer: goal

The great Allan Langer also captained the Australian team, and played for a couple of years in England with the Warrington Wolves. A goal in rugby league is worth 2 points, whether it is a conversion of a try or a penalty goal. Field goals, however are worth one point (but were worth two prior to 1967).
10. Sit down on a blanket or mat, cheer for your favourite team!

Answer: match

A match in rugby league lasts for 80 minutes (2 40 minute halves, changing goal-lines at the half-time break). There are also some different forms of extra time: golden point, where the first to score any points becomes the match's winner, or traditional extra time where 10 minutes is played out and if the score is still tied, then the game goes into golden point mode. Canberra beat Balmain 19-14 in traditional extra time in the 1989 grand final, one of the most memorable season deciders ever.
