Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the 2003 #1 overall pick?

Answer: Carson Palmer

QB Carson Palmer was the 2002 Heisman Trophy winner. Drafted by the Cincinnatti Bengals out of USC.
2. How many picks were taken during a 5-minute stretch that was almost unheard of for the first-round of an NFL draft?

Answer: 5

Triggered by Minnesota's "pass" for the 2nd consecutive year, the picks went: Jacksonville #7-Byron Leftwich, Carolina #8-Jordan Gross, Minnesota #9-Kevin Williams, Baltimore #10-Terrell Suggs, and Seattle #11-Marcus Trufant. It may have messed up the Rams the most who had the pick at #12, and needed more time to trade up to pick Trufant.
3. Who was the third quarterback taken in the draft?

Answer: Kyle Boller

Picked #20 by the Baltimore Ravens out of California. Boller's coach actually taped his left wrist to his bicep to improve his arm strength and to keep it tucked during practice.
4. There was an abundance of quality defensive linemen in the draft this year. The Lombardi trophy winner, Terrell Suggs out of Arizona St. had 24 sacks, Jerome McDougle out of Miami with 13 1/2 sacks were just a couple of the bumper crop. How many defensive lineman were taken in the first round?

Answer: 11

A record 11 Defensive Linemen out of 32. The previous record was 9. The linemen in order are: Dewayne Robertson-Kentucky, Jonathon Sullivan-Georgia, Kevin Williams-Oklahoma St., Terrell Suggs-Arizona St., Jimmy Kennedy-Penn St., Ty Warren-Texas A&M, Michael Haynes-Penn St., Jerome McDougle-Miami, Calvin Pace-Wake Forest, William Joseph-Miami, and Tyler Brayton-Colorado.
5. Of the players picked in the first round, how many were drafted by a team that plays in the same state as their college team did?

Answer: 4

Charles Rogers-Michigan St. & Detroit, Marcus Trufant-Washington St. & Seattle, Kwame Harris-Stanford & San Francisco, and Nnamdi Asomugha-California & Oakland.
6. Of the following colleges, which one had the most players picked in the first round?

Answer: Miami

Both Miami and Penn St. had four players picked in the first round. Miami's players were Andre Johnson WR, Jerome McDougle DE, Willis McGahee RB, and William Joseph DT.
7. Did Florida St. have more players eligible for the draft than Miami?

Answer: No

No, Florida St. provided 9 players, while Miami provided 14.
8. How many different teams held the #13 pick?

Answer: 4

It started out as Washington's pick who traded it to the Jets, who traded it to Chicago, who traded it to New England, who eventually drafted DT Ty Warren.
9. Which of the following teams did NOT have a pick in the first round?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons traded away their first pick for WR Peerless Price from Buffalo, to get QB Michael Vick a playmaking receiver.
10. Was Willis McGahee was drafted in the first round?

Answer: Yes

Yep, the Buffalo Bills had the guts to take quite possibly the most talented player, but also the biggest risk in the draft. After being a sure-fire #1 overall pick a year ago, McGahee blew his knew out in the championship game and his stock dropped drastically. Situations like this are the number 1 reason why the players in college do not want to extend the post-season.
11. The draft was very heavy on defensive linemen this year. Who was the first DL taken?

Answer: DeWayne Robertson

While Suggs may be the most talented of the bunch, for some reason scouts brought his stock down because of his 40 time. We'll see how he turns out... As for DeWayne Robertson, a DT out of Kentucky drafted by the New York Jets, his only drawback seems to be his decision to come out as a junior instead of as a senior. Otherwise he is very powerful, quick player at 6'1.
12. Jacksonville took Byron Leftwich. What does Leftwich have in common with Jacksonville's current QB Mark Brunell?

Answer: Brunell is left-handed and Leftwich has Left in his name.

Yep, I knew that was the main reason Jacksonville would take him. All about that evil-hand.
13. The Cincinnati Bengals had the first overall pick back in 1995 turned out to be a bust. Who was he?

Answer: Ki-Jana Carter

One of the all-time great running backs at Penn St., Carter's professional career was plagued with injuries. Ryan Leaf was taken #2 overall in the 1998 draft by the San Diego Chargers, and set an all-time career low QB Rating of 50. David Klinger was another QB taken by Cinncinnati in 1992, who didn't fare much better than Leaf.
14. What college did Troy Polamalu attend?

Answer: USC

One of my favorite college players. The first safety taken in the draft at #16 by Pittsburgh. Just 5'10" and can squat 600 pounds.
15. Who was the last player picked in the first round?

Answer: Tyler Brayton

Oakland acquired this pick from their winning counterpart in the Super Bowl. Some notifiable last picks in the first round: Darrell Green-Redskins in 1983, George Teague-Packers in 1993, and Todd Heap-Ravens in 2001.
