Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A blue flag may be waved both during the race or practice session. What must a driver do when they see a blue flag?

Answer: Slow down and allow the faster car behind them to pass.

During a race, the person being lapped must allow the faster cars approaching them to pass within a certain period of time or else risk a penalty.
2. A yellow and red stripped flag is being waved. In what direction do the stripes run?

Answer: Vertically

If the flag is stationary, it means there is water or oil on the track. If the flag is being waved, it means the driver will soon come in contact with a slippery surface.
3. A lesser known flag is a black flag with an orange dot. What is the diameter of that orange dot?

Answer: 40 cm

This flag is used to when race officials believe a driver has a mechanical difficulty and must return to pits to get everything checked before rejoining the race.
4. What does a red flag signify?

Answer: The race has been stopped.

If 75% of the race has been completed, the race may be ended and standings will be as they were on the last completed lap. Otherwise there may be a re-start.
5. True or False: The way the yellow flag is held or waved means different things.

Answer: True

If the yellow flag is stationary, it means there is a hazard on the side of the track. If it is being waved, it means there is debris or there is an obstruction on the track. If two yellow flags are being waved it means, the track is completely blocked. Under no circumstances can a driver overtake under the yellow flag.
