Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1986 World Cup quarterfinal between England and Argentina featured the infamous 'Hand of God' goal scored by Diego Maradona, as well as a slightly memorable second goal. Who was commentating on the match for the BBC and ITV respectively?

Answer: Barry Davies and Martin Tyler

Barry Davies famously said after Maradona's brilliant second goal, "You have to say that's magnificent", whilst Martin Tyler incorrectly shouted, "Goal", when Gary Lineker looked to have scored a late equaliser. England lost the game 2-1, and Argentina went on to win the competition.
2. Kenneth Wolstenholme's famous quote, "They think it's all over, it is now!", is obviously associated with the BBCs coverage of the 1966 World Cup final between England and West Germany. Can you remember who commentated on the game for ITV?

Answer: Hugh Johns

As Geoff Hurst scored England's fourth goal deep into extra time, a legendary piece of commentary was spawned. Unfortunately for Hugh Johns, it wasn't his, and the quote, "Here's Hurst, he might make it three. He has! He has. So that's it. That is it!", was soon forgotten.
3. The Argentina v England match from the second round of the 1998 World Cup finals in France was memorable for the emergence of young Liverpool hotshot Michael Owen. Owen scored one of the goals of the tournament to put England 2-1 up in the first half, but who commentated on the game for the BBC and ITV respectively?

Answer: Jon Champion and Brian Moore

Jon Champion is primarily known for working on ITV, but he did start his mainstream career commentating for the BBC.
4. In 2001, England famously beat Germany 5-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Munich. On that same day, a legendary commentator passed away. Who was it?

Answer: Brian Moore

Moore was the voice (and face) of ITV football for nearly thirty years. He was particularly known for presenting "The Big Match", ITV's flagship highlights programme of the '70s and '80s.
5. The 2005 Champions League final between Liverpool and Milan was one of the greatest finals of all-time with the English team coming from 0-3 down to eventually win on penalties. Clive Tyldesley called the game for ITV, but who commentated alongside Andy Gray for Sky Sports?

Answer: Rob Hawthorne

With Martin Tyler being Sky Sports' number one commentator in the 2005 final, it was by far the biggest game of Rob Hawthorne's early career.
6. Who commentated for the BBC at the 1977 FA Cup final, in which Manchester United stopped arch-rivals Liverpool from 'doing the treble'?

Answer: John Motson

The 1977 final was the first FA Cup final that Motson commentated on after taking over from David Coleman.
7. Saudi Arabia made a big impact in the 1994 World Cup when they unexpectedly reached the knockout stages. Their games against Belgium and Sweden were both covered by which BBC commentator?

Answer: Tony Gubba

The Saudis scored one of the all-time great World Cup goals against Belgium through Saeed Al-Owairan, but the Swedes proved too much for them as they crashed out in round two. In the early 2000s, Tony Gubba was the commentator on ITV's, "Dancing on Ice".
8. During the 1986 European Cup final between Barcelona and Steaua, ITV's commentary feed broke down and a 'stand by' had to be found. Who was it?

Answer: Peter Brackley

Brackley is probably best known for his work alongside Ray Wilkins, commentating for Channel Four on, "Football Italia".
9. Which commentator covered Argentina's 6-0 demolition of Serbia and Montenegro, for the BBC during the 2006 World Cup group stages?

Answer: Jonathan Pearce

Argentina's second goal was one of the tournament's best with Cambiasso finishing well after a brilliant team move. Pearce is used to high quality football. He's a Bristol City fan.
10. "It's only Ray Parlour", was a line used by which Chelsea supporting 'celebrity' on "Sky Sports Fanzone" commentary of the 2002 FA Cup final between his team and Arsenal?

Answer: Tim Lovejoy

Of course, Parlour immediately fired up Arsenal 1-0, and Lovejoy (presenter at the time of Sky Sports' "Soccer A.M.") never lived it down. Arsenal went on to win 2-0.
