Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It is Super Bowl XXVII and the Cowboys are routing the Bills. A fumble is recovered by a Cowboy who races to the end zone. A touchdown would give them 59 points, which would have been the most scored in Super Bowl history. However, this player decided to "hot dog" it, and held the ball out before reaching the end zone, and Don Beebe of the Bills caught up with him and stripped him of the ball. It went through the end zone and the play was called a touchback, and the Bills took over 1st and 10 at the 20. Who was this embarrassed Cowboy?

Answer: Leon Lett

In an otherwise forgettable game for the Bills, this was one shining moment when even in an embarassing defeat, Don Beebe showed a lot of character with his hustle and quick reaction. Leon Lett, on the other hand became a blooper highlight.
2. This player was in his rookie year and seemed to forget that in the NFL, if you catch the ball and are not touched, you cannot spike the ball, especially on the field of play. Which player that was seemingly very proud of himself spiked the ball that resulted in a lost fumble?

Answer: Plaxico Burress

During a game against Jacksonville, Plaxico Burress made a catch and fell down untouched. He got up and spiked the ball. However, he was not in college anymore. The ball was still live and a Jaguar picked it up. The result? Touchdown for Jacksonville.
3. "The Miracle of the Meadowlands" was not considered a miracle by many Giants fans. The Giants were defeating the Eagles, and QB Joe Pisarcik only needed to kneel down for a Giants victory. However, he decided to hand off the ball resulting in a botched handoff, and Herman Edwards of the Eagles ran in the other way for six as time expired, as did the apparent Giants victory. Who was this running back for the Giants?

Answer: Larry Csonka

Blame goes all around for this one. The offensive coordinator was Bob Gibson who called the handoff. Many players protested the call but the week before, Pisarcik had changed a sideline call, and was told he would be waived if he did it again. There is a rumor that Csonka, who played most of his storied career with the Dolphins, told Pisarcik that he would not take a handoff and to just kneel.

The rest is history.
4. In 1964, in a game between the Vikings and 49ers, this player recovered a fumble and ran in into the end zone. The problem was that it was the wrong one. He threw the ball into the crowd and it was counted as a safety for the team that fumbled. Who is this player?

Answer: Jim Marshall

He was forever cursed with the nickname "Wrong Way Marshall" after this play. He was considered by many to be the greatest iron man in the NFL, as he played in 302 straight games. He played for 20 seasons and had 29 career fumble recoveries. However, I am willing to bet he would love to make it 28 and forget about this one.
5. In 1997, what player celebrated a touchdown by head butting the wall, which knocked him out of the game?

Answer: Gus Ferrotte

In a 7-7 tie on a Sunday Night Football game, this was the highlight showed most often on sports shows the next day. Jeff Hostetler was his backup and did not perform that well. Ferrotte went to the hospital for X-Rays and was stated to have a sprained neck. Perhaps he had a sprained brain before the infamous head butt?
6. In a Houston Oilers win over the Jets, Buddy Ryan, the Oilers defensive coordinator punched Kevin Gilbride, the Oilers offensive coordinator in the face, almost knocking him to the ground?

Answer: False

In the final game of the 1993 season on a Sunday Night, the Oilers defeated the Jets 24-0, for an 11th consecutive win and a 12-4 record. However, Buddy Ryan was unhappy with the Oilers offense and did throw a punch at Kevin Gilbride, but it was only a glancing blow. This was played over and over on Sportscenter on ESPN.
7. In the Miami Dolphins perfect season of 1972, the Dolphins were defeating the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII by the score of 14-0, when the Dolphins lined up for a field goal that would have put them up 17-0, to possibly cap a 17-0 season. The Dolphin kicker, Garo Yepremian had his field goal blocked and grabbed the ball as it bounced back into his arms. In a futile attempt to pass the ball, he lost control and a Redskin picked it off and ran for a touchdown, making the score 14-7 giving the Redskins new life. What was the name of this Redskin?

Answer: Mike Bass

In an otherwise perfect season, Garo's attempt to pass the ball is the one blemish that stands out. He seemed to throw the ball straight up into the air, it then bounced off his helmet and Mike Bass picked it off. Poor Garo has to watch this over and over as this clip has become immortalized in he NFL Films archives.
8. In a Thanksgiving game between the Dolphins and Cowboys, the Dolphins lined up for a field goal with only seconds remaining on the clock in an unusually snowy day in Dallas. The kick was blocked and Texas Stadium cheered, as the Cowboys seemed to have a victory. However, a member of the Cowboys touched the ball and the Dolphins recovered it with one second left. This time, the Dolphins were successful in the field goal attempt, and left Dallas with a victory. Who was this member of the Cowboys?

Answer: Leon Lett

The Dolphin kicker was Pete Stoyanovich, and he went from goat to hero after kicking a 19-yard field goal, erasing the memory of the blocked 41-yard field goal. The goat immediately became Leon Lett who ran 30 yards downfield before touching it, and knocking it to the Dolphins goal line. Newspapers the next day read "Leon: Lett It Go". Perhaps one blooper was not enough for him after the Don Beebe strip in the 1993 Super Bowl.
9. In an opening day game in 2002, the Kansas City Chiefs missed a field goal in Cleveland as time expired with the Browns leading 39-37. However, a member of the Browns threw his helmet on the field in celebration and was flagged with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The Chiefs got one more chance to kick a field goal and made good this time, winning the game 40-39. Which Brown was this?

Answer: Dwayne Rudd

Dwayne Rudd joined the list of football follies after tossing his helmet and pounding his chest. He left Butch Davis a very unhappy coach.
10. During the 2002 season, this coach elected to kick the ball off in overtime on the road after squandering a lead. This team never got the ball back, and ended the season with a 0-8 road record. Which coach is this?

Answer: Marty Mornhinweg

This might have been the final nail in the coffin for the Detroit Lions head coach, as he was fired after the season after only winning 5 games in 2 seasons and none on the road. Newspaper headlines the next day read "The Mornhinweg After"
